Default Self Harm Advice - What To Do When You Are "Triggered"

What I've come across in the past is that people don't know what to do when they are get the urge to self harm, or how I put it, when they are triggered. I do many things to stop me from self harming and I thought I'd share them with everyone and hopefully pass on some helpfull advice.

This article is perfect for anybody who wants to stop self harming.

One of the main things you have to do is keep yourself distracted. Do something that will take your mind off self harm, the event that triggered you. Do something you enjoy, something that will completely distract you. You could:
  • Play some computer games
  • Listen to some music
  • Go for a walk
  • Write a poem/story
  • Dance
  • Sing
Those are just some examples. The main objective is to keep yourself distracted, so anything that does this would be perfectly fine.

If you get to the point were you are finding it nearly impossible not to self harm, try some alternatives.

Hold some ice cubes

If you do this, all your doing is causing pain, and you will get no permanent damage to your skin or body. You only need to hold them for about 10 seconds, that seemed to be enough for me.

Elastic bands

Elastic bands are another alternative. You can just ping yourself every time you get the urge, it does leave red marks but those fade within a couple of days.

Red pen

If you're more attracted to the blood when self harming, you could try to draw on your arm with red pen. Try not to over do it, you could end up with ink poisoning.

These are the safest alternatives I know. If anyone knows any side effects to these that I do not know about, please post below. It's only a short article, however it holds some key information that helped me more or less stop my self harm. I found elastic bands and ice to be the most effective.

Hope I've helped.

Nice. I've never done it but I have had urges. I just look at the scissors (or whatever) and think "this is not gonna end well".

It's not good, but I will stratch my body when I get like this. The thing is that I think a lot in bed, so I get like that and my whole chest is expossed.

I have, a couple of times, have had the urge to cut myself, but i think about the people around me and what harm that would cause them.

It would cause more harm to them seeing me bleeding that me cutting myself.

To all those who cut themselves out there....
Why do it? It's painful, think about others around you before you do it. x

I haven't cut in months, and I didn't really need anything to stop me... just willpower (although I cut only 2 times). If I'm really angry now I ping an elastic band, but that's just habit
Great article.

I WOULD NOT advise ANYONE to do this one. if you do read up on "frostnip" (the stage before frostbite) and know to stop when it gets there then you might wish to try it. and even if you do this. dont do it alot because it kills cells and tissue. holding a ice cube till it hurts alot will do this and it will leave a scar. it might not get to the stage of septicaemia or maybe it wont even go as far as frostbite but it will most likley get to frostnip if you do it to long.

its alot easier to get then people thing, espically in places like hands and feet.

Cutting gets so serious. People take it too lightly, as if it IS an alternative for handling emotions. I almost killed myself twice by cutting...I had to stop or I wouldve been sent away to a mental hospital.
