What I've come across in the past is that people don't know what to do when they are get the urge to self harm, or how I put it, when they are triggered. I do many things to stop me from self harming and I thought I'd share them with everyone and hopefully pass on some helpfull advice.
This article is perfect for anybody who wants to stop self harming.
One of the main things you have to do is keep yourself distracted. Do something that will take your mind off self harm, the event that triggered you. Do something you enjoy, something that will completely distract you. You could:
- Play some computer games
- Listen to some music
- Go for a walk
- Write a poem/story
- Dance
- Sing
Those are just some examples. The main objective is to keep yourself distracted, so anything that does this would be perfectly fine.
If you get to the point were you are finding it nearly impossible not to self harm, try some alternatives.
Hold some ice cubes
If you do this, all your doing is causing pain, and you will get no permanent damage to your skin or body. You only need to hold them for about 10 seconds, that seemed to be enough for me.
Elastic bands
Elastic bands are another alternative. You can just ping yourself every time you get the urge, it does leave red marks but those fade within a couple of days.
Red pen
If you're more attracted to the blood when self harming, you could try to draw on your arm with red pen. Try not to over do it, you could end up with ink poisoning.
These are the safest alternatives I know. If anyone knows any side effects to these that I do not know about, please post below. It's only a short article, however it holds some key information that helped me more or less stop my self harm. I found elastic bands and ice to be the most effective.
Hope I've helped.
