What do you all think about them? Personally I prefer Google without them mainly because I find them distracting and a little intense each time I visit Google.

No point in it for me - I don't have a Google account and even if I did, I have my browser set to automatically clear cookies whenever I close all of the windows.

They seem needless but the fact that the customization's there is nice I guess. Imo a search engine should be fast-loading and comprehensive, and I think the backgrounds detract from that simplicity a bit. s:

Simple Google is the best Google.

I like the idea of it and it's a pretty simple way of customising your search engine without ruining the simplicity of Google.
