Icon9 RIP

Born 31/03/2006 was our beloved Xbox 360, sadly it passed away this afternoon on the 26/07/2010 at just over four years old after coming down with the 3 red lights. The autopsy results show that it was suffering from the 0102 error. There was no suspicions surrounding the case.

Yeah its gone, I honestly thought it wouldnt last this long but now it is finally broken. I would attempt a fix but apparently the 0102 error is solder joint related and I am crap at electronics, I would try the heat gun on it, but I dont have one. Think we will be getting either another normal 360 or the slim version

The mainboard inside of it is pretty much broken, apparently caused due to Microsofts poor solder joints and the heat and cooling inside flexing the board and where it connects to the CPU/GPU and the heatsinks. I am going to try and replace the Xclamps as soon as I get a chance and see if that works but probably will still get a new one soon regardless.

Its a shame, I honestly thought this was the Xbox 360 that would never get the 3 red lights and actually be 100% needing a proper fix or binning. Its the first one we have bought too. It did live its life, its a shame how it did go though, it wasnt in game where it was getting really hot or anything it was when I was playing music from the PC through it on the TV, the screen froze, I restarted it, was about to play a song and then the screen turned a reddish colour, I restarted and the 3 red lights appeared.

oh...i see.. well instead of trying to fix it, wouldn't it be cheaper if you bought a new one ?

(i have no idea how much each thing cost so that's why i am asking)

Well to fix it all I need is four screws and four nuts and some thermal paste, the stuff that goes on your PC processor to transfer the heat between the chips and the heatsink that would cost at the maximum around £2 so not very much at all. There is an issue with fixing it though, you still will face issues at some point and probably when you least expect them but that could be a month, a year or five years away. I think I will just attempt a fix and buy a new one and use the fixed one if it works till its gone again.

Thats one thing as of late all I have played is things on my PC and not the 360 so it could actually be a good idea just to attempt a fix and not bother buying a new one, could save some money I am quite sure now I can get it working again but who knows for how long.

it also depends on how much do you use your Xbox??? i mean, you'll fix it but if you play everyday , it will crash sooner i think

I would play it roughly twice a week for an hour or so, lately I havent played on it at all and just used it for streaming videos and music through the TV. When a new games out though I would be on it all day long sometimes if on the weekend. I think thats its worth the couple of pounds to fix it if it works and if not then I will see what I can salvage from it.
