Have you considered upgrading to Win7, I know when I was running Vista it was nothing but a pain to use.

The home version isnt too much, not compared to Ultimate. I think its worth every penny myself, its one hell of solid OS compared to Vista

If I were to...erm..."acquire", Windows 7, how does the installation work? Do I need to back-up everything on my PC?

I would just run the upgrade myself, I am not sure whether programs etc stay though so you might want to backup any important data you have like games and programs for example just in case anything goes wrong, if you have a second partition I would stick them on that till the upgrade is done. Should be a case of pop the disc in, autorun launches the setup and you choose to upgrade like that. I do know it takes a lot longer this way though and I am quite sure you end up with an auto backup it makes called windows.old in your C drive.

This work even if you change your running system
because i had Windows Xp
When i change into windows 7
i found A folder called Windows old in my C drive
By another mean you program files Beside your Desktop & Documents
Will be saved as windows old
It's better to copy your important files & delete in case there were any unwanted
files
