New CPU does not always mean new motherboard, check the socket type of the motheboard e.g. AM3, LGA 1755, etc, the board will support any processor with that socket type. If you have an intel CPU now, then changing to AMD would require a new motherboard.

it's alright, to tell me
what you think, about me,
i won't try, to argue,
or hold it, against you.
i have a 2500k and its more than sufficient and also needs a new motherboard as its on a different socket
a fairly high end core 2 quad would be more than enough for bf3 (they recommend at least a core 2 duo)
also an i5 is much more expensive
Uhm okay I think Intel Core Quad Extreme QX9650 is better than i5 2500k
It's available for my motherboard.
i5 760 and above mark better than the Quad you mention in benchmarks.

You want to look back at what you've said here. LGA 1755 doesn't exist.
And depending on the CPU model you pick, to what you currently have can mean a new motherboard. Say for example if you're moving for the Duo Core family to the iCore family, you do need a new motherboard.

No they're not. I bought my i7 2600K for like £230 and the mentioned Quad Core Q9650 is like £380
Also while I'm at it, staying on old technology can sometimes prevent you from upgrading on parts of your system (mainly speaking about RAM here). I'm not 100% sure if they do LGA 775 boards with DDR3, but even if they do you're living in the past and need to get off the Duo Core family imho.
around 40-50 fps is good enough for multiplayer , as i happen to be the co-founder of a server for GTA SA's Multi Player Mod. MTA , you do know that others ping and fps has a large effect on yours in any multiplayer game ?
Not to sound like a fanboy here, but AMD's current offerings suck ass. There's simply no justification for buying an AMD processor when you can take your pick of any Intel CPU in any price range that will give you more value for your money. It used to be that AMD was competitive, now they're being curbstomped by Intel in every category. TL;DR: Don't buy AMD.

This is not true. Overclocking WHEN DONE CORRECTLY poses absolutely no risk of damage to your PC. You fried your motherboard because you were being a nooblet and did something wrong. The Internet has a vast number of resources at your disposal if you want to research this stuff beforehand, which you should.

Aaaaand buying a Core 2 Quad now would be a terrific waste of money. Absolutely do not do this. Those 4 year old CPUs are still going for $250+ when a current generation i5 is cheaper, 9,001 times faster and would be a tremendous upgrade. What I'm saying is, it's better to spend the same money for a huge upgrade than it is for a relatively minor one.
Lastly, your GPU should be adequate for BF3. The drop in FPS could be your internet connection or something else unrelated to your hardware.

E7200 is LGA775 probably... He will need a new mobo with anything better than a Core2Quad.
Also, I5>Core2Quad. I5 is a quad core hyper threaded processor. Check the benchmarks.
Although, like the others its probably not the processor. GFX card, Ram, HD speed, and internet speed are bigger factors. 44FPS really is not bad at all.

The quad-core i5s don't have HyperThreading. HT is actually useless for literally 99.999% of games out there so no HT is a good thing. Don't waste more money on an i7 (only difference between i5 and i7 is larger cache and HT) because it'll preform exactly the same if all you do is game. HT is for multithreaded applications like transcoding and media editing.
