Question Need advice on watercolor painting?

I'm trying to paint a picture of a sunset and waves crashing against the sand as a present for my Aunt and Uncle. I have limited tools:watercolor paint, brushes, but no liquid clear stuff to rub on the canvas. And I was hoping to make an oil painting, but it's hard for me and I have almost 0 eperience with oil paint. I was hoping that some of you could lend me some advice on this and maybe tell me of some techniques that would be benificial for me and my painting? Please, I really don't want to mess this up and I would be thankful for anything you could tell me. Thank you!

Hello there~
I didn't get it. You start off talking about watercolour but then you talk about oil painting? D:

Suddenly my eyes are open
Everything comes into focus, oh!
We are all illuminated,
Lights are shining on our faces
We are, we are blinded !

We are, we are blinded !

I think it's really hard to teach you drawing techniques like this. Personally, I barely could learn some primitive ones by eye witnessing. lol

Have you tried to check some videos on youtube?

@EllaBella Oh I love doing sunsets !!! It's super hard to make it look "bad" normally when I do them I use chalk pastels but i think this should still work with water colors
I start with a base color all over exept for bit at the top I use a pinky orange don't be afraid to mix colors in a pallet or dish to get the perfect color
Than gradually draw lines getting daring and darker orange at the bottom like a real sun set the key to this is to blend blend blend I can't stress this enough other wise it will just look like blocks of orange/ pink
Now at the spase you left at the top ( only leave a little bit blanks at the beginning bot this should take up about a third of the page) you want to have shades of blue if you look at a real sun set you will see that at the top it's getting dusky blue and even dark blues at the top, you will want the lighter grey ish blues blending in with the pinks and the darker blue blending in with the ligter blue depending on how late you want it to be will be how dark the blue is and vibrante the pinks and oranges will be
Now for the sun, depending on how late it is will determine the size I like to just do a dome type shape to outline in yellow than go in with orangey red shades
Hope this helped sorry if this was to much info
Also you may wanna do a few of these to really get the hang of it

Hey. I don't know much about watercolor, but I painted with oils for 3 years. If you have any questions about oil painting, I can help you some. I also think youtube would be a good idea.

Aubrin: Thanks for all the info! And don't worry, I need as much help as I can get. You can never give me enough information. Emily: Thanks for the offer. Actually, When I try to use oil paint there are various problems: 1) it's really messy and i don't know how to get that kind of paint off the brush.2) I got a oil set from my older sister for christmas once, but there is oil in the set and I don't know exactly how to use it. (sorry, I'm not experienced with oil painting so I've only tried it a couple of times and those were disasters. I think it was probably because I didn't use the oil!) Can ou give me some advice? Thanks!

I always used turpentine to clean my brushes. It works really well. As for it being messy, being able to stay clean while painting with oil just comes with practice. When I first started, I would get it ALL over me every time. Now, I barely ever get a smudge. When you do get the paint on you, baby oil works wonders to get it off.
