For those of you who don't know, the Day of Silence is in support of gays, lesbians and bis. Many people in my school participated. Teachers respected students who were a part of it, and if they had to, students wrote things down to talk. I was so inspired by this when it happened (I was unaware of it until my friend wrote down and explained it to me) because I have a lot of gay friends, and my niece is bi. So, in response I wrote this poem.

A Day of Silence.

The silence you hear is not for the weak.
Acceptance is all they seek.

The silence you hear is for the strong.
Who've kept to themselves all along.

Keeping from those who cannot comprehend,
And listen to the silence and the message it sends.

You have a voice, make it heard.
Just for today, don't say a word.

Thoughts and criticism welcome.

What? We need a whole day to support queers? Are they some sort of special race, have they done anything noteworthy to deserve this day? Lol, the things people come up with these days are ridiculous.

Obviously, yes.
They get beaten up, they get rediculed, they don't have the rights we straight people have...
People pariah them all year long. They deserve their own day.

And yeah, I agree. My gay friends have it so much harder sometimes. But my school is pretty good and accepts them for who they are, so a lot of people, even straight people participate in the day of silence.

I know, right!? And then those black people. A whole month?!1!


Second line needs to an extra syllable or two. I'd also go into "And listen to the silence and the message it sends" and clip 'and' in place of a semicolon after silence. It runs off the tongue a bit easier.

I like the flow of it otherwise.
