Re: [Article] What Are the Advantages of Single Sex Education?

Boys tend to soften their competitive edge and become more collaborative in a single sex setting. They can just be boys and not worry about what the girls might think. Boys enjoying poetry and playing in an orchestra as opposed to a marching band are the kind of thing you will see in a boys' school. Girls drop their shyness and begin to take risks in a single sex setting. They become more competitive. They embrace sports like field hockey and soccer with gusto without worrying about appearing like tom boys.
That does all sound really nice and good for the kids but I wouldnt want my child in seperate sex schools, I think with me being educated in a school of both sexes that I just would prefer it that way. I dont think I myself was disadvantaged in school because of this, I did what I wanted to do regardless of what others may have said or thought. I suppose it would be good if it wasnt forced upon the child and they were asked which they would like and told the benefits/disadvantages of each, and that will lead to the debate of whether children should be given such important choices at such an early age in life.

Girls really only get that way around boys you know.
Girls are more likely to backstab for a boy.
Also, that's because of how you grew up. The thing is though, when you mix boys and girls, things get more complicated.

Fair enough.
Hypothetically speaking though... let's just say his needs were better suited for a single-sex school, as in he could thrive in that environment better than in a co-ed. Would you let him go to an all-boys school or at least consider it?
And again, I'm speaking with numbers here. Some people thrive in co-ed schools, some in single-sex schools. Everyone is different.
As for those choices... as odd as it might sound I think that going to an single-sex school early on in life BUT then having the option of co-ed or single-sexed schools when you got to about high school, I guess.
It's a combo of both I suppose. Getting the advantages of a single-sexed school early on but then going to a co-ed school would in turn help with what you mentioned - about men and women working together.
A happy medium I think.
Although... I suppose it would be up to the parents at first.
After all, they have the right to give their kids an education that they see fit. At least up until the child can decide themselves.

It would depend really. If he was to want to do drama and the single sex school seemed to have much better resources and tuition for learning drama I would encourage him to go there more than likely but if the resources were identical I wouldnt bother encouraging and leave the choice to himself.
The latter of what you said I could imagine being a thing for everyone, it seems to meet both sides of this debate, in addition to that a choice for the child when he reaches the age of going to high school would be good too, where theyre asked if they wish to carry on at a single sex school or go to one with both.
One thing I wonder is this, if given the choice, would all the single sex schools end up empty or would the co-ed schools, surely the amount couldnt be equal with 50% wanting to be in a single sex school and the other half in a co-ed.

Well this just depends on the child.
If you were to grow up in a single-sex school, I'd say the results could come out 60/40 wanting to stay.
Why? Because it's what they are used to and if the children are more concerned with their future, rather than dealing with the opposite sex, then they would want to stay.
As for co-ed schools, if you grow up in one and did not like it - such as myself for example - then you might be going to one.
Although, really what I said before was not 100%, I honestly think the best solution is single-sexed schools up until highschool, at which point they would become co-ed and based on grades... with the exception of private schools that is who could be co-ed or single-sexed.
That way both parties can get an education based more on their natural way of learning and then in highschool be based upon higher or lower learning level.
Meh, to the best of my knowledge if a child is concerned for their future then they'll pick the best school for them. Typically these tend to be private single-sexed schools, in which you must keep up your grades or pay for (as private schools don't get money from the gov't).
Though, from what I hear you really only see these kinds of hichschools in Japan (because it's all based on grades there).
Now, colleges are a different story. There are quite a number of single-sexed colleges who also have brother and sister buildings. And they produce many outstanding people
Anyway... no one would like my system unless of course that was the only way they knew how to go about schooling.

Even though studies have proven otherwise?

Re: [Article] What Are the Advantages of Single Sex Education?
I think its totally dependent on the kid.. you cant say one is better.
However kids at single sex schools have been found to have better grades.
Going to a mixed school can help males and females get along with each other, but going to a single sex school does not mean you dont hang out with the opposite sex, so either way outside of school and later on in life they will interact with the opposite sex.
So really its up to preference, if a kid wants to do well they will work hard regardless of whether they are surrounded by boys or girls..
♥. Just another day like any other,
Nothing in the sky said run for cover,
There was no parade,
No lightsflashing,
No songs to sing along the way. ♥
Re: [Article] What Are the Advantages of Single Sex Education?
I still think single-sexed schools are better... in general.
As a matter of fact if I don't just go ahead an homeschool my children I'll probably send them to single-sexed schools.
Though if I have a son and daughter I gotta find sibling schools.
