Cathleen Martini, a German bobsledder who was a heavy favorite to win gold in the two-man bobsled, was disqualified after a spectacular crash in Vancouver on Wednesday. Canada went on to win the event.
The sled started to skid halfway through the run, and Martini couldn't control it. At speeds nearing 90 miles per hour, the sled turned on its side. Remy Logsch, Martini's brakeman, ejected from the sled, sliding across the icy track at Whistler.
The images from this event evoked thoughts of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger who died practicing on this same track. Other athletes have questioned the course's safety, and just today, a Dutch bobsledder withdrew from the four-man race due to his concerns about safety. However, Logsch and Martini walked off the track under their own power.
The shocking part of the crash is that Martini has never crashed before. This season, she has five gold medals, but not the one that truly matters.
There has been a lot of crashing and falling this year.

Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
Probably.
To the best of my knowledge, they are using a different way of keeping the ice frozen - something about pipes and dry ice or something.
I can understand why, even though it's still winter if the sun comes out then it's going to start melting some.
As for the ice skating, it's because it's indoors and there's all that body heat, among other things.
As for the speed skating... the ice is just slow.

Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
honey, the track is not easy, you know?? it's pretty fucked up and now problably there's only ice instead of snow and that makes things 2 as complicated... so they must be so much more careful and they really need to have experience and you have to know the track
Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
Its not the ice on the track in bobsleigh this year its just the track is too difficult and technical.
Then again the racers knew the dangers of the sport when they went on that track. Complaining now would be like putting your hand in a fire and complaining when you get burnt.
Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
Maybe if it's so icy they should grit it or something to make it less slippy.

Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
They are using different ice though.
Also, I'm not sure about the luge but on the ice rinks the ice id more lumpy and looks wet, like there is water all over it.
I was saying that in comparison to past Olympics, there has been a lot of crashing, wipe-outs, and falling.
Also, it seems to me like the only track that is working is the Women's track, which is what the guys are using because of the accident, the Jr. track doesn't seem much better.
*rollseyes* Yes, I know the track is not easy. Anyone with a brain knows it isn't easy - I never said it was easy either.
No Olympic sport is ever easy.
I was saying that I've never seen so many crashes and falling all in one place before.
The tracks, on most things, are a lot rougher than previous Olympics which is both a good and bad thing.
It makes things more interesting but it also invites more injuries and it's also a lot slower.
In sports that involve speed, slow ice isn't a good thing.
Now, on the downhill stuff, that's different.
Though, at least this year, the ice dancers didn't drop anyone. But I don't think the ice had much to do with that.
Basically, it's just slow ice. If you are used to going at high speeds then slow ice can mess you up.
Also, I would like to add that on the Ice Skating, I notice it more-so because I used to be an Ice Skater - and a pretty good one for an amateur as well.
I can tell the difference between slow and fast ice and this ice is slow.
...Don't call me honey.

Re: German bobsledding favorites in frightening crash
I thought the was about the bobsleigh track
anyways if the ice is slow or not... it wont make the track much more dangerous
also its not as if its effecting the outcome of the competion. the ice is going to suck for everyone so the best person is still going to come out on top so does it really matter
