My reckoning is that TV isn't good for people, some children are growing up not being able to speak because their parents are leaving them in front of the TV and therefore the child is lacking social interaction. When slightly older Tv is ok, but only in small doses, I only watch Tv for a maximum of 1 hour a day, usually I don't watch it at all.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

In my opinion, it's not that tv makes people dumb or obese, people do that to themselves. They make the decision to sit in front of the tv and eat cookies instead of going out for a bike ride, tv doesn't do that for them. They also make the decision to believe what they see on tv, even though the events are completely unrealistic. Tv may not promote the best lifestyle, but it also does not in any way prevent people from taking responsibility for their own health and education. We have the power to turn off the tv at any point and go get some exercise or do homework. I think people just choose to blame their obesity or lack of intelligence on tv so they don't have to face what the cause really is (lack of motivation perhaps?) or make an attempt to fix it.

It's not the Tv's fault or the shows' fault, the problem is the fans. I've seen people who are fanatic with tv shows. I actually know a girl who is obsessed with the twilight saga. You can't speak with her about anything but vampires, and i got the feeling she actually believes such things exist.

And what Daniela says is true, alot of people here are addicted to novels.
I remember a time when a show called "Morangos com açúcar (sugary strawberries)" starred an episode about a virus epidemic in a school (which doesn't exist). Some weeks later some teenagers started believing they were infected with that virus... It's ridiculous if you ask me...

TV does make most people dumb. Since most programs are mostly about creating excitement, you can't get too clever watching it. And most people watch pretty passively, so basically they're watching images and sound, get themselves emotionally involved in a bullshit fake reality, and leave their judgment resting.

Not the perfect recipe to get smart.

When you say "people" most of us assume that we're talking about the average viewer.

The average viewer doesn't watch the Discovery Channel or any of those. Let's face it.

So yes, if you watch smart channels all day, you're going to be addicted, but probably get smarter.

But the average viewer is likely to become as dumb as the programs he or she watches.
