This is a subject which really concerns me. I found this article, in portuguese, on facebook and when everybody was laughing, i just got worried. i tried to search the article in english for you..
this is not quite the same but it contains what i want to show you..
So, after reading this, tell me: where's the culture nowadays? I mean there are things in there that i studied in my 5th grade. How come high school students don't know anything? and besides, this was a study made in US but this exists in everywhere.
What are kids doing in school if they don't learn anything?
Czechoslovakia has never existed, Fergie is a pop singer, not a duchess; Clint Eastwood is a sensitive movie director, not Dirty Harry; and John McEnroe stars in TV ads, not on the tennis court, Beloit College's "Mindset" list says.
Bullshit, Clint Eastwood is a really old badass, never a sensitive movie director! I-it's just bullshit!!
Kids don't know their History, but hell they don't know their own History let alone World History.
Parents are not bothering to be as strict as they once were either. That's part of the blame.
When I was growing up, if you didn't know something and failed because of it, you got fucking punished for it. These days kids can get away with failing.
Hey, I'm a major History nerd, that doesn't just mean old guys in worn out uniforms you know. It means culture history as well. I watch old movies that revolve around certain time periods, back when you could exploit anything left and right, before things were politically correct and vomited lies all over you in order to give children the wrong idea.
Back when comedy was actually funny. Back when you could mock a person and they wouldn't go running off crying, but instead take it and throw it right back at ya.
But I've always been older than the rest of my Generation. I feel sick and disturbed reading this.
Also I should add that kids are being given ADD these days. Look at any given TV screen of a modern show and look how quickly scenes change all the time. Then look at music videos these days, all they are is half nekkid women and flash after flash after flash.
No wonder everyone thought I had ADD as a child - I was growing up on that each time I wasn't with my Daddy. And it's only gotten worse since then.
Also one reason they do that is because people can't dance. Not really anyway. Or sing. It's all digital these days.
So much complaining, so little time.

same here.. i mean today teens just seem not to care if they fail or not. i never fail a year because i knew what would happen to me if i did. today, i see teens scoring F and they actually laugh. when i was young, i remember i read and read because i wanted to know more. today is the same though i prefer to know more on certain subjects only.
but then , there are thing that everyone know like Germany. Everyone knows that Germany was separated in 2 before 1989... And that Beethoven was a great composer... Omg, news like this just.. makes me really angry. I wonder: what teens care about today besides sex?
I see this everyday at my school, well when they are working at McDonald's when they are older and I have a steady well paying job and a family, I'll be the one laughing.

this article describes exactly what ive read in a book "Generation (D)oof" (only in German) about our Generaion two years ago.
that its not limited to Germany, I found it in an old article in a psychology journal from the 80s. a Spanish social-scientist claims in it, that we addle with increasing affluence from generation to generation more and more. and that this thesis even is even older, is proved by some short stories from the ScFi-Genres, i read'em once. they were created in the time of 1920-1990.
so, dont panic. ^^ its a quite normal principle of degeneration like its observed already in the ancient high-cultures til this times. according to Meadows, i would call it a marginal phenomenon of the "limit to growth"
It was intended as a reminder to faculty at the university that references quickly become dated, but quickly evolved to become a hugely popular annual list that gives a snapshot of how things have changed, and chronicles key cultural and political events that have shaped a generation.
^ This. It isn't so much stupidity or a lack of education ... it's a certain ignorance caused by the passage of time. Climates change - social, geographical, whatever. If something's not relevant, it doesn't always make a good example or prove engaging enough to be used in the classroom.
History's important and I agree that there should be an emphasis on notable political and/or cultural events, but how do you make that definition? I know shit about the American civil war because I've only ever studied modern world British history and classical civilisation.
It all comes down to relevance.

STOP. ARE YOU READING THE ABOVE POST?
If not, do it. I'm beginning to get the impression that 50% of TF is populated by literate parrots/sentient mirrors.

Really??!! O.o i thought at least in europe, the school taught about the same thing.. i mean i learnt the old civilisations back in 7th grade, i learnt the development in all europe and the world, i did learn a bit about american's civil war although i don't remember it very well. but i studied the 1900's in all europe, i mean the 1st world war and its impacts in europe and my country, of course. same with the 2 world war, i studied the events during the fascism (for example the "bloody sunday" on Russia),idk, stuff like that
i really thought the studies in europe were almost the same you know.. because we're europe and most of all , we belong to EU.. we were suppose to be together.. in almost all... including the studies (so i thought)
I know shit about the American civil war because I've only ever studied modern world British history and classical civilisation.
Well here's one thing:
It was the worst war for American's that we ever fought in. Out of all the wars we've ever been involved with the Civil War caused the most deaths for us.
Although I'm pretty sure Canada and England were involved in it somehow... maybe France too... it's been a while and sometimes all the things I know about wars get muddled together.
But Canada was involved I know that, they helped the Union.

The real question to ask here, is how well educated people were a few generations ago. I suppose they didn't conduct a survey like this back in the 60s, because the young ones were too packed with LSD to have any opinion on who Beethoven was.
I suppose that the education level is terrible but stable.
