Sorry if this question had been already asked. My searching skills are HORRIBLE.
Anyway, I'm an agnostic. I'm open to the concept of faith but I don't really understand faith.
So my question is like, what makes YOU a Christian/Hindu/Muslim/ect ? I'm not talking about a general belief in a higher power, I'm talking about belonging to a specific religious group that believes in their own God, each with their own unique history.
I want to understand how someone can believe in something that cannot empirically be proved. And furthermore, belong to a specific faith, all of which cannot be empirically proved.
Heyloo
I used to be Agnostic until I started to research different faiths and found out what I believed fitted none. I thought I was a Buddhist for a while, But they don't believe in an almightily being and I do, but I still had some Buddhist beliefs.
Its like I believe certain things from different religions.
After more research, I'm a Unitarian Universalist.
If I'm being honest, I don't know why I believe theres a God. I just do, and I'm glad that I do.
I guess that's not a very good answer, but I'm one of those people that If I want to belive something I don't need proof to believe its true.
And then again, there's something that I don't believe is true involving religion and I don't know, maybe its because I pick and choose what I want to be real or made up.
I don't know If I'm making any sense, but What I'm trying to say is that I don't need any proof for my beliefs, I just believe and feel and thats enough for me.
Sorry, I probably diddn't answer your question! =S!

Faith really. Lots of things are full of holes. The way I see it, no one here now was there to see the beginning so nothing can really ever be proved in my humble opinion.
I believe in God because I choose to. There's really no reason big behind it.
Growing up I wasn't raised too strictly about faith and stuff, my parents just wanted me to go to church was all. They said later in life it was up to me, what I wanted to believe.
Praying to God, reading the Bible, going to church. These things and probably a lot more got me through a lot of shit when I was younger.
As for why I'm of a specific faith... no reason, most of that was just growing up in the environment so I feel comfortable there. That and unlike a lot of Christian denominations, Baptists (despite their name) do not believe one has to be baptized in order to become a Christian. Baptists believe that all you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior and that Baptism is symbolic of that as well as a public demonstration of that.
So that's the big thing about why I'm a Baptist as well. Although, I myself was Baptized when I was about 8 or 9 and when I'm older and feel I'm ready I'll be going back to church and eventually get re-Baptized.
There's nothing special behind it, only that it's my choice.
Oh and my mom is Baptist and my daddy is Church of Christ. I really had two different learnings growing up... I was so confused as a child. lol

I'm not religious... But I think 99 percent of people who are religious are only believers for two reasons.
1. They subconsciously are rebelling against an unfair world. They want to believe that they are good people, and somehow someway it will all work out. They want someone to tell them it's alright and they "someone" is keeping score and knows how hard you're trying. Or how tough it is. Whatever. It's all hedges against the night when Humans are so fragile.
2. They are truly insane. Hear voices in their heads, believe they are doing work of something greater than them. As a means of control I can see the appeal.
the other 1 percent are just idiots.

I hate to pick nits here, but all the religions I know of believe in ONE (as in the SAME) God...they're 'monotheistic'. The "Story" might be different, but when you really look at the messages, they're actually quite similar.
I'm not so sure about organized religion, it seems more a way these days to differentiate ones self, rather than as a unifier of humanity (as your misconception illustrates).
One the other hand, why does anything need to be "Proved" to be relevant or accurate or 'correct'.?
As a man of science myself, I still cannot account for the absolute origin of life, the 'Spark' that started it all....
For most, I suspect they believe simply b/c their parents believed, and who questions their belief systems? Sure, kids rebel when it serves some self interest, but how many actually question the values and beliefs they were raised? Those that do always seem just angry to me.
I'm not really religious yet somehow I got an A in my religion exam, this doesn't really add up.
Overall really, no-one was there in the past that is alive today to have seen everything and over time certain religions have contradicted themsleves. They are saying one thing and then the next theres something that makes the other story not believeable.

Was a devout Catholic until 2 years or so, I just started questioning about the validity of an omnipotent being. Catholic simply because of the envronment I lived in, though my parents themselves did not participate as much. Personally at this point I even doubt the Bible, as it is still just the writings of a man which are always to some degree biased and self-serving. At the moment I'm struggling to make head/tails of the situation, since this eventually crumbles down to the "chicken or the egg" scenario. So I'll say I'm a struggling religious person
