Socialism is, going by the modern definition of the term, (not 'workers controlling the means of production') a medium between those two extremes. The market ultimately determines the price of goods and services, but we have the government issuing taxes on the market to help the common man.
Our country is mostly capitalistic, which is why we have the healthiest economy in the World. The debates start where the line should be drawn on socialist programs, with health-care being the most recent.
