Celebrities. There isn't a single one of us who doesn't know of one - we cannot escape them in todays society. There is a difference between celebrities and someone who has, perhaps, come up with a way of fighting illness or disease. This quote from Answers.com explains celebs:

Quote:
Generally speaking, a celebrity is someone who gets media attention and shows an extroverted personality.
Anyway, onto my point. I believe celebrities were made to keep us thriving for more, thriving for that new haircut, that new brand of t-shirt or that new perfume named after a celeb - all for what? To keep the money pumping. Where did this thrive for being known start? In reality, we actually do not know - for all we know celebs could have been made to sell products (which they do whether they are conscious of it or not.)

I do not believe this is right - having people who spend hours in the morning preparing make up, straightening their hair, putting on that lovely new expensive dress as role models is putting quite a lot of pointless pressure on young people - most of the time causing depression or anxiety. It is teaching anyone vulnerable to such propaganda (i.e. teens/young adults) to buy and wear more and more makeup, making young boys and girls want to be someone they cannot be. For instance, I have a friend who applies make-up three or four times during the day because she feels self conscious - and who's fault is this? Well, it all boils down to those celebs, doesn't it? People should be proud of who they are, not want to be someone completely different.

In conculsion, celebs are the evil in this world. Discuss.

I totally agree! Celebrities are usually so fake, it makes young people want to be just like them and they think a certain person is their idol. It's not right. Celebrities such as Heidi Montag and other celebs that have got many plastic surgery's are not rolemodels for people. People should believe they are beautiful, and fine the way God made them, not striving to be like someone else.

I completely agree with you, celebrities are a bad influence on everyone, lots of them get plastic surgery and are quite often in the news for the wrong reasons, but of course people forgive them because they are famous. Jordan (Katy Price) for example, she's near enough 70% silicon, she's probably had plastic surgery on her original plastic surgery.

Celebrities have tought be to be self conscious about there apearence etc. to absolutely stupid lengths, people also wasting money on clothing lines these people may have, these are usually expensive and are often updated very quickly, quite a lot of celebs aren't really that talented and don't really have two brain cells to rub together, fair enough some are actually smart but the majority aren't. Example - John and Edward Grimes (Jedward), they have their own TV show in which they act like a pair of indentical retards for however long the show lasts, to be honest most people have a more interesting life than them!

I don't think they are evil... I just think the rest of the world are total dumbasses for caring about what these people do outside of the reason for them being famous.

That being said, I am not one of these dumbasses and do not care what celebrities do.
Unless it's breaking law, in which case they should pay for it.

Aside from that, I stand by the firm belief that some people look better covered in engine oil, grease, and dress like a mechanic. I'm looking at you Miss Rodriguez.

But seriously, doesn't matter to me. Most of them are vain ignorant assholes who think their opinion is worth more than anyone else because they can act (maybe) half as good as people used to act or sing.

Well, having actually met some celebs and seeing them often on the streets here in my NYC, I have to say...they're really just people. But then again, so am I. LOL!

I think there's a diff btw'n their public persona and their private ones, it's really all an act. they are ACTORS, after all, and inherent in that job description is an ability to redefine themselves and the parts they play. And with that, come our perceptions of them. Except for Jack Nicholson who is REALLY as crazy in real life as the characters he typically plays in the cine. And so is Al Pacino, who seems to take up all the oxygen in the room, as he does in the movies, too.... But I digress...

I think the real question is why some people (of any age) seem more vulnerable to their own perceptions, why they need to see certain celebs in a certain way, and then actually believe what they create is real....whilst others are able to recognize that it's all a gimmick. THAT is the more profound q (to me, anyways), and relates not so much to the abilities and skills of the celebs but rather some flaw in our development...

YESSSSS!!! Sweet Jesus I would wreck that chick.

anyway. Celebrities are just stupid puppets. There are a great few who are not. Most of the really popular ones are. For example, Brad Pitt I don't believe is. His movies are too good, and he actually.. you know.. exists outside of the media. Snookie is just a fat cow who exists only to piss people off. Which she does very well. If she were to get raped with a rake and then thrown off a cliff... I might actually laugh.

What I don't get, is why you're blaming the celebs. They are a very small wheel in the machinery.

I think what makes people overly self conscious is the media: On TV, magazines and street posters we all see people who have been carefully chosen and even more carefully polished (makeup and/or photoshopped) to present an ideal no real person can fulfill, including those portrayed.

I don't think we can blame the media either, because if they took the photos without playing all these fantasy games, it wouldn't catch our attention. When did you last see an American movie, in which the actor's average weight matched America's true average weight? (not because that was the issue, but just to be realistic) If that movie was on TV, would you, or would you not zap to something else?

So I guess it's our fault, collectively, and we pay for it collectively.

Lohan does drugs, Lohan needs make-up because she looks hideous without it, Lohan is a celebrity. All celebrities do drugs and need make-up is wrong

A lot of hype with many of them. Too many are simply overrated in my view.
