Personally...I really don't care...I think it should be the person's choice...Realisticly if someone want's to commit suicide they can do it with or without euthanasia...But euthanasia is alot less messier and is supposed to be painless...
As for animals...They're just animals...We've got to many running around anyway...
^ If i was up for the risk of killing my mood, you'd be deader then dead atm.

Dearest, The days are all so long,
and in the shadows I spend them all.
My heart and I long for slumber.
Slumber I'm caressing you, I bless your touch, I lust for you.
Slumber you are not a dream, Not as much as you seem.

Speaking as someone who recently had to put a beloved pet down due to cancer, I agree with euthanasia of animals only if the remainder of their life would be miserable and painful. I loved my old dog as if he were my child as opposed to my pet. Euthanizing him just seemed much more kind than letting him lose function of more of his organs.
As for people, I agree with it only if the person is of sound mind when requesting it. I don't believe other people should make this choice for someone unless of course it's a "pulling the plug" situation on someone who otherwise would just exist on machines and really have no quality of life.
EDIT: and I only agree with it(by request of the person) if their quality of life will deteriorate due to disease or something.
If people were to seek it out just for the sake of committing suicide because their significant other dumped them or something, than no.
The difference between animals and humans - in my opinion - is that animals lack a soul. It sucks yes to have to put your pet down, but there are times where its the best thing for the pet because of either their deteriorating health or their no longer safe to have around say children, or people in general.
In regards to humans, I don't like the notion that we're helping people kill themselves. However, I can understand the why - when they are terminally ill, when they will have a deteriorating life, etc. But it can only be a decision they can make if they are in a proper state of mind - that isn't being dictated by emotions and feelings that change constantly. The question then is how do we know if they are in such a mind where they can make the decision and thus the request for euthanasia.

I think there definitely is a difference between an animal and a human. To me, it would seem that a human life is much more valuable than an animals. Not to say that animals are not valuable but they just aren't as valuable as a human life. In that case, I think that it would be acceptable to euthanize a dog if it were suffering from a disease that may cause it pain and suffering.
I'm a little more hesitant to accept euthanasia when it comes to human. Most human lives do have some value to them (I suppose there may be an exception or two). However, I think that in extreme cases of pain and suffering it may be an acceptable option. And it should be done in the most painless way possible. And if possible the person must consent to the procedure.
Ahh..Euthanasia.
Recently in the UK a programme was televised 'Choosing to die' which showed a author 'Sir Terry Pratchett' followed peoples journeys and met people who were thinking of or going to have an assisted suicide. He also met one person who had decided to live and fight was the path he wanted to take. This programme actually showed a man go through the procedure and pass away.
This programme caused lots of contraversy and lots of people complained saying it wasn't right for it to be aired.
The reason Terry Pratchett covered this issue is because he has the early stages of dementia and he wants to make this a legal procedure in the UK for the future.
After the show there was a big debate about the show and euthanasia as a whole. This show was accused of being propaganda.

Anyway...
In my opinion euthanasia should be legal in the UK for people with terminal or life changing/threatening conditions. I'm sure in these situations life isn't going to improve and if they are in pain or feel they cannot go on then they should be able to choose. After al it is their choice, its their life...

@Crystal I agree. If someone is a terminal patient with not a hope or a prayer of live, not even by any noticable margin, then they should have the option to put themselves down after they say their goodbyes.
Now, since animals have no cognition humans are the judge, but i believe the same concept would apply. If the animal would be living a hopeless, agonizing existence, then it would be best to put them down.
@Zach - Yep I agree with the animal thing to. If your cat/dog/horse or whatever was in a considerable amount of pain each day it would be kinder to put them down rather than let them suffer.
