wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, gluttony. should they really be considered sins or not??
Michael summed it up essentially. It depends on the context in which you are asking that question. If you ask that to a person professing to follow Christian doctrine - your answer is "yes".
"There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief...and unspeakable love."
- Washington Irving
I think it would depend on your religious beliefs for the most part. Although, I would disagree with David when it comes to christian doctrine (at least in Catholic Doctrine). My understanding and what I was taught is that the 7 deadly sins are actually the attitudes and beliefs underlying other sins. They are the main causes of human misbehavior in the eyes of God.
Lust - When in excess.
Gluttony - Which is excessive.
Greed - Has both positive and negative attributes. Some greed is good. Greed is only bad when you steal from others.
Sloth - Excessive laziness.
Wrath - Probably the trickiest one. Wrath serves it's purpose when it's deserved (as in, it's the flip side to Justice). So really, it's Justice in excess.
Envy - Jealousy in excess. Some Envy is good, it can drive you to succeed. It's only excessive when you seek to tear others down because of it.
Pride - There's both positive and negative Pride. Having Pride in yourself and accomplishments is one thing. It becomes excessive when it becomes Arrogance.
Vanity (Pride) - Vanity on some scale is good. Again, when it becomes excessive you get people who are obsessed with their appearances and become vain, narcissistic, and conceited. However caring about your appearance is also Vanity.
It all comes down to what is excessive. Excess can drive us to the worst of places, that's why they are considered sins. Excessive Lust can cause you a world of problems... hell, just look at the forums. Excessive Gluttony is eating more than you can consume. It doesn't apply to just food but to also drugs, alcohol, and anything intoxicating. Basically, it's about waste. Like buying two turkey's and only eating one and having to throw away the other. It's about wasting and over-indulgence. Excessive Greed is thievery. When you want something to the point of stealing it. it's material. Excessive Sloth is no working. Surviving only on the charity of others and not even trying to do anything about it. Excessive Wrath is uncontrolled feelings of hatred or anger. Self-destruction (wrath at ones self - such as suicide), violence (wrath to others such as murder). Wrath is the perversion of Justice. Suicide is considered the prime example of Wrath as it involves hating ones self and rejecting the gift of life. Excessive Envy is general desire of what one considers themselves to be lacking. Greed is material, but Envy could be a personal trait or something else. Excessive Envy is to make others suffer because of your own short-comings. To tear down others because you can't stand to see them having something you do not. Excessive Pride is pure Arrogance. It's the desire to be better and more important than others. It's a pretty easy one to figure out.
However without Lust, as a species we wouldn't survive. Without the desire to consume, we would not survive. Without Greed, we wouldn't flourish. Without Sloth, we would over-work ourselves. Without Wrath we would have no need for Justice (for Wrath allows us to acknowledge wrong-doing - it's only dangerous when misplaced). Without Envy, we wouldn't struggle to become better. And without Pride we wouldn't acknowledge our own feats either as a race or as individuals.
So basically, yes they are sins and not just for religious reasons. Excess in any of these will cause destruction of ones self or of others. They're sins because they cause mankind to crumble. Pride is the worst of all sins. More often than not humans put Pride before Reason and one with too much Pride will go and start shit because they believe they are being insulted (even if they're not).
But when you balance them out with the Seven Heavenly Virtues - all of them - they are not excessive and will cause people less harm. Generally speaking.

Right and wrong will be right and wrong, regardless of whether we suppress the truth or not.
As far as sins and deadly, all sin is deadly. The "seven deadly sins" is a Catholic concept regarding mortal vs. venial sins, a works-based righteousness and the unfinished work of The Cross resulting ina need for purgatory to purge all your leftover venial sins. If you sin a mortal sin, you will likely lose your salvation according to Roman Catholic teachings. It's a good thing the bible disagrees with them.
