The way I see it, If Canada(or whatever country) were to crack down on things like murder by handing out harsh, irreversible punishments; how many people do you think would think twice before joining violent gangs?
How many kids do you think twice before bringing a gun to school?
The list goes on.
I never said it was moral, I know it isn't. However I can tell you for a fact that if a member of my family was murdered, the person who murdered them would NOT have the luxury of continuing to live their own life, in or out of jail.

I see, I see. Thanks for clearing that up, I get you now I disagree with you about us basically being unable to meet what morality requires, but I think that's probably just due to our different understandings of morality.
Wrt your point about cracking down with harsh and irreversible punishments, I just wanna point out that the death penalty effectively fails as a deterrent and is actually thought to increase the amount of violent crimes. If you skip back a couple of pages I mentioned this in my long post; you can check the sources if you're interested (:

I just think of it as a type of defense. If somebody walks up to you and your family, and starts attacking them, what are you going to do? Well, some people would run off screaming - and others would try beating the shit out of the attacker. There's nothing wrong with physically defending yourself or others.
Kind of hard to explain what I'm trying to say. I apologize for any confusion trying to understand me. xP

I agree with you about the self-defence issue. But that is not capital punishment; that is self defence. In England (and, I think, most/some US states) the law provides an individual the authority to use "equal and appropriate" (or something like that) force in self-defence. So, you are legally justified in stabbing someone if you can show beyond reasonable doubt that they were going to stab you if you didn't get them first.
