There must have been water there at some point and they must have gotten beached.
Interesting find and all, but it's not that huge of a deal. Environments gradually change over time, what is desert today could have been a part of an ocean at one point just depending on how the earth moved (not that I'm saying it was, I'm saying any non-specific place could have been).

What is there to discuss exactly? They're just whale bones.

This reminds me of something though. Didn't they find beached whale remains of some rare whale way off shore at some point? I don't recall exactly.

Ha, so a little side tracked, but yeah, they may have been beached except that the article suggests that the whales died at different times, so there would have had to have been something beaching them. Plus there were other fossils found in the same area

Discussing the causes seems pointless though seeing as the geologists themselves feel there are many possibilities to choose from.

My theory is that perhaps the area they were swimming in had some sort of poisonous substance that caused them to all die around the same area, or a lightning bolt hit where all of these creatures were swimming and killed them instantly.
