Something I posted on my Facebook earlier but seeing as most of the people on my Facebook have the cognitive function of someone who barely knows what a teacher is, I thought it would be better off here as well.
NOTE: This is aimed at the strike on Wednesday the 30th of November 2011.
Today (23/11/11) in one of my classes, the teacher told members of the class to be quiet and to do the work (if you can call it work in Business Studies anyway), I then proceeded to ask her if she was participating in the upcoming strike to which she replied yes. To me, this automatically makes her hypocritical. Why? Because:
1. She told students to be quiet for the good of our own learning.
2. She is going on strike.
3. Going on strike is not for the good of our learning.
4. Therefore, they are our learning by going on strike.
So to have the audacity to tell people that you are making them do something for their own good (in this case, getting good grades at school.) and then to do something yourself that is against the good of them amazes me.
Also, when I asked why she was striking, she said 'I don't know.' Then why are you striking? It's ridiculous to blindly follow your union's striking with no idea about what they're actually striking for! Is that not the kind of behaviour and personality that allowed Hitler and the Nazi's to take over and run Germany?
What will this strike achieve? Nothing. Well, perhaps it will make the governments perception of teachers change from intelligent people to spoilt brats that if they don't get their own way they go off and sulk. If anything it hinders their cause due to the fact that they won't be earning wages, so the government will not be earning income tax off of their wages, which means that the government will have less money and therefore less money to pay teachers?
Now, for the strike itself. The strike is because of the fact that teachers haven't recieved a pay rise in several years (which admittedly they should due to the fact that inflation occurs in the buying of goods [goods are more expensive] therefore the salary of a job should increase at a rate of inflation similar to that in which the price of goods inflate.) and also because the government is raising the age in which you can retire from work.
Point one: The government cannot pay you more money if the government does not have the money. Our government is a large amount of debt and is anticipating more debt due to the fact that several of the biggest countries in the EU (Spain, Greece, Italy etc.) are going bankrupt and we are most likely going to have to bail them out with a large amount of money. Why would it be wise to increase wages that are coming from the pocket of the government? It wouldn't, or else there's a very real possibility of our country ending up bankrupt as well. If anything we should lower wages of civil servants or anybody else who is employed by the government, including the PM himself in my opinion.
If you are purely motivated by money, and that money is not enough for you, leave the job. You go into a job knowing the amount of money you earn a year, if you do not like that then don't accept the job. It's not a hard concept to grasp!
Point two: Find below a graph of the life expectancy in the UK.

Find below a graph made by me.
You are (on average) living for longer. You should therefore (on average) work for longer. If you feel it is necessary to retire earlier then save up some money so you can retire earlier. Another easy concept to grasp that so many fail to do so. I see no reason as to why people should be allowed to leech off of society for an extra 10 or 20 years and not have to do any more work. My generation is expected for many to live to above the age of 100, do you expect us to retire at 60? No. That would mean we spend almost half our life in retirement. It makes no financial sense.
For the good of everybody, join a non-striking union.
