I remember I signed up to Habbo when I was 10 even though you had to be 11

But anyway, in some ways it would be good but you might not want loads of information given away or something.

No, plain old stupid in my opinion. The game ratings aren't there to stop people under them from playing them, just purchasing them so somebody responsible can make sure they're suitable to play it. You realise how much of an impact on sales it would have for game developers? There are tonnes of little prepubescent kids on Call of Duty, so what? Parents choice if they want their kids to get messed up by a game. If you want the government to dictate entirely how kids should live their lives lets just round them up and put them all in care. I'd like that. Kids suck.

Nope, I don't really like the idea, look at today's world the internet is as important for an 8 year old as it is for a 16 year old. Everything has a positive and a negative side in our world. For the sex sites yeah I agree on having a limit with an account to them or something with a a proof of being 18+, but for the games and other stuff, nope. A kid can learn something from a game or from the internet to be honest, I for myself, decided to get into Computer Engineering next year in college and I have found my love for computers, internet and designing through the internet.
Looking at the tutorials and what people can do made me love them and urged me to do the same and to try and excel in them as well. And about the games, don't forget that each generation is smarter and more adapted than the one before it. Kids these days KNOW that what they are seeing is just a game and that horror movie is just some special effects that they are not fascinated by them like a 50 year old man would be.
Also, a study showed that kids out-grow games or know that these stuff are there for a short amount of time to be used and then tossed away after that. Games also improves the hand-eye correlation which would make them excel in a sport that requires both. Puzzle games and games that require some thinking in some parts improves a child's memory and teaches them how to think of stuff in a different perspective and to solve problems which would help them in real life situations and in mathematics, physics and so on.

My opinion on the matter. =)

So pretty much a social security number except for web use?

That doesn't sound very appealing to me. Sales for so many things would drop. Our country is already awful, decreasing sales even more probably isn't a good idea.
I think age rated items, such as video games and movies, are over thought. I grew up playing GTA Vice City, San Andreas, God of War, etc, and watching movies like Terminator, Predator, and Die Hard. I turned out fine, as well as everyone I've ever known.

I don't think so, it will ruin the integrity of the access of things on the internet.

The government doesn't care if I had a facebook when I was 12. They don't care that I played runescape when i was in 3rd grade, but you have to be in third grade.

http://ifea.net/cipa.html

Read this:

Quote:
(2) HARMFUL TO MINORS.--The term ``harmful to minors'' means any picture, image, graphic image file, or other visual depiction that--

(A) taken as a whole and with respect to minors, appeals to a prurient interest in nudity, sex, or excretion;

(B) depicts, describes, or represents, in a patently offensive way with respect to what is suitable for minors, an actual or simulated sexual act or sexual contact, actual or simulated normal or perverted sexual acts, or a lewd exhibition of the genitals; and

(C) taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value as to minors.

The 13 year old age limit to register on these sites is because of government regulations. They've done their part, and they don't want to do ANYTHING more. Not until it's a panic situation, if there ever is one. As long as the internet is borderline functional, the government DOES NOT CARE. This is how it is with everything.

Welcome to America. This is our country.

*gets battleaxe out*

I will fuck up whoever tries to do this to me.

Fucking privacy people, learn it. Stupid government is next going to be telling me which times of the day I can piss.

Slumber I'm caressing you, I bless your touch, I lust for you.
Slumber you are not a dream, Not as much as you seem.

At this point in time and in this society, I think that it would give too much control and information to the government. I would be against it. The internet is fine the way it is. I wouldn't go tampering with it too much.
