Default Hershey residents ban HIV student

I saw this on the news the other day and I was just shell shocked. What the hell are they thinking? They act like this 13 year old kid is just going to invade the school and contaminate every kid in sight. I mean, right now his status is John Doe, but after going through all the trouble of going to court and fighting for your right to attend this school, would you still want to go there?

Well, I think its wrong, naturally. But how legit is the health risk?

Parents aren't happy with having their child along with a child that has HIV? Fine, take their kids out of that school then. If this kid got into the school then there obviously isn't a health risk or he wouldn't be in it in the first place.

He is on medication, and so the possibility of him infecting someone with HIV is minimal, like really, there is a 4% chance.

Then it was out of line.

There's really not enough article or case to review and put my opinion on..
of course it sounds barbaric at first but there could be more to it. Like this one chick i went to camp with had something and we were told not to share clothes or things like that because of it.

A link to the article would have been helpful.

A petition has started on the web site www.change.org, asking people to stop discriminating against an HIV positive 13-year old. It says, "It is particularly disappointing to see such small-minded bigotry promoted by an educational institution."
Me personally, I don't think I'd ever want to be a school administrator. Those who are concerned about their kids getting AIDs are going to be upset, and those who don't want a kid getting kicked out for AIDS are going to be upset. Schools are more concerned about not getting sued these days, and on legitimate grounds I think considering that it would seem upon my observation, that you can sue for just about anything in Modern American society.

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time. - Abraham Lincoln

EDIT:
Should schools send anyone home for having a disease? Isn't that discrimination too?

like i said, the possibility of him transmitting something is minimal.

Doesn't matter when it means a three million dollar law suit, at least, to the school it doesn't matter.

I think it's over-board, but you have to understand why they do it.

well this hits home right now seeing as i recently had a friend pass away from AIDS. it was really sad listening to the things he had to say about it and how he was banned from school, the scrutiny he and his family received because of the social stigma and and negative things associated with AIDS.

it's really sad to see. i wish there was more AIDS awareness so people could be aware of what it really is. AIDS can only be transmitted through blood, semen and vaginal fluids. so what risk is it for this child to attend school? why should he be denied education because of an illness he has?

i honestly think a lot of it is related to lack of knowledge. before i met shiloh, i didn't really know that much about AIDS. maybe if there was more awareness people could understand that just because someone has AIDS doesn't mean they should be treated any different. they're just like everyone else and deserve the same rights.
