I personally don't do it either, as I've opted for my phone and can use apps on that to listen to stuff.
But the reason it's illegal is because the artist and the record company don't get paid for the song they put out. I don't really think it's a huge deal, and if the people who made that law did, they would enforce it more. But they don't.
It is illegal and has reasons to be. It's an artist's work that is in cause. The artist is putting efforts into something and isn't being rewarded for his work properly.
I download most of my music, just as many other people on the internet do. For instance, if I really appreciate an artist, I try my best to actually buy some CDs. (but since I'm broke... Lol.)
It's sad that downloading music is so easy though.
Suddenly my eyes are open
Everything comes into focus, oh!
We are all illuminated,
Lights are shining on our faces
We are, we are blinded ! We are, we are blinded !
I think an artist shoule get paid for his work. however it should be reasonable fees. Maybe a little bit less than they charge now. I have gotten free stuff but not nuch in a while. I just don't need too much more songs since I have enuff that I don't even listen to.
But maybe they should make it harder to download for free if it's that big a deal for them. Maybe. Idk.
The way I see it is it helps promote bands and other musicians in certain situations. There are many people throughout the world that can't afford to buy music, and resort to illegally downloading music. If they enjoy something they download, odds are they are going to spread the word to friends and and family. If they have the money, they might end up buying an album or two.
There are some however who have plenty of money and just chose download load it freely. Considering how many people download media, not just music, illegally, it's almost impossible to hold every individual accountable for their actions in doing so.
ThePirateBay, one of the most popular torrent websites, has 9.5 million leechers. That is, 9.5 million people download torrents. Not all of the torrents are illegal, but that's still quite a large number. And when you combine the torrent websites together, such as BTJunkie or Demonoid, the number just gets bigger.

I hardly do it anymore. Songs are only 99p from itunes so it's not much of a big deal
I think it's that the can't enforce it, really. It's more like they've given up than they don't care.

Well they're only 99p, but yeah I guess they could be cheaper. The cheaper they are the less people will hesitate to pay =3
Nah, I don't pay jackshit unless I feel the artist deserves it. In that case; I'd go buy the album.
It doesn't make any sense to pay for it if you can get it free and fast so easily.
Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive
I get it custom, you a customer
You ain't ‘customed to going through Customs, you ain’t been nowhere, huh?
I have done it before but I don't do it because i feel bad for the singer that work hard to get there and then don't get the money they are looking for.
It's only acceptable if theft is acceptable.
Whether it's possible to do anything about it is a different question, I highly doubt it given how vast the internet is. There is no way of holding every individual accountable.
