Anyone in this thread actually bother to read the article? Placing him in the duffel bag was a form of treatment/therapy specifically for his autism.

And that is supposed to be an acceptable reason to throw a small child into a bag? There are more methods of treatment than treating the child like shit.

I think you've missed what I was trying to say, so I'll try and make myself clearer. To be totally frank with you, the article gives us very few facts, and I consider it it pretty presumptuous to assume that the kid was just chucked in a duffle bag and closed in it as a punishment for being "naughty". What seems far more likely to me is that staff use the duffle bag as a comfort or calming method for him when he is hysterical, upset, throwing a tantrum etc. The article states that the bag is used for this purpose, although the boy's mother wasn't aware that he had actually been inside it. We don't know exactly where he lies on the spectrum, and this sort of treatment is very common for those with high-functioning forms of autism. Apparently in this circumstance the boy seemed distressed when he got out the bag, but was this because he was in the bag or was he perhaps still distressed by whatever happened that caused him to be in the bag? We don't know! Assuming the former, does this mean the bag was always a bad idea? We don't know! Maybe it was usually successful in calming him down, and happened to either not help or make things worse in this case. We just don't know!

In short, I think a lot of people in this thread have assumed far too much. The amount information given in the article is far too small to draw conclusions as extreme as a lot of people appear to have.

Specifically in response to your post, how do you know that there are better methods of calming this particular child down than letting him inside a duffle bag with soft balls in it?

Is it not PC to wonder what the little kid must have been doing to earn his way into a dufflebag? I mean, if the choice was between putting him in there or punting the little bastard, I don't see the need to criticize.

This is just pathetic. Who could honestly have so little of a conscience as to do that and not have any regret?

Why should they feel regret and why does doing this demonstrate a lack of a conscience? Please read my previous posts.

Wow. My brother has Autism. I couldn't even tell you what would happen to all of those involved if that had been my brother. So ridiculous that there are people like that in the world.

That's freaking terrible :/ People can be so horrible... treating another human being with such disrespect just because he's a little different...
