Actually, you are allowed to use equal force here in the UK. If someone is going to kill you, you are allowed to kill them. The trouble is trying to prove in court that a person who is now dead did intend to kill.
Withholding judgement on this until more info. If they literally were just burglars, then shooting them was not reasonable and was immoral. If they were more or they intended to harm/kill, then it gets a bit more complicated..
