Default Quick question for the theists out there.

If god came to you and told you to kill one of your children (if you don't have kids say he is asking you to kill one of your siblings or parents) would you do it? if so i hope you will reconsider, if not on some level i consider you an atheist simply because you have doubt and would choose morality over what your "god" tells you to do.

On a side note i got this argument from Penn Jillette and wanted to share it.

Actually, I am really interested to see what some people will say...and even more so; to see who who won't bother posting because they don't like people questioning their faith. lol

If you can't defend your faith when it is questioned whats the point?

I think it's unfair to say "you're basically an atheist because you wouldn't kill your kids if god told you to".

It throws up the whole euthyphro dilemma really doesn't it. You have to question of what benefit killing someone would be. Also just because God commands something that doesn't necessarily, e.g. the story of Job, God allowed the Devil to all but kill him simply to test his faith. Is it really worth it to do that? No it isn't, it's not something an apparently omnibenevolent God would do.

I personally am not religious in any way and I don't believe that people like me should have to defend our position on cases such as these, I more believe that the religious people themselves should have to explain why they rely on a 2000 odd year text to criticise people in the modern day.

@LaurenTheNerd -so? you are missing the point, if you chose not to kill your child that means you on some level doubt your gods judgement. in my opinion that's not very theist to me.

I second that. I think it's unreasonable to say that all the people who'd go against what god told them are atheists. Personally, I wouldn't let my morality be overruled by my faith. Having said that, I don't identify myself with any religion.

I think you're missing one of the key tenets of at least one of the Abrahamic religions, Judaism. I'm aware of the whole "Abraham, dog, go sacrifice your kid Isaac, aight?" and he almost did. But then again, as Judaism progressed, it became more of a question-based religion. I would question why G-d decided to ask me to sacrifice my kid, and I wouldn't do it. Not even because it would be immoral- simply because I wouldn't want to kill my kid.

Does that make me atheist on some level? No, because I believe in G-d. Just because I question something doesn't mean I question it's existence. I question my parents, but I'm certain they exist.

I don't think you asked this question because you are genuinely interested in the beliefs and dogma of Christianity. I think you asked it just to attack Christian reasoning.

This is why I'm not answering your question. You made this thread not to provoke a discussion, but rather to let everyone know of your contempt for Christianity. Come back when you've got more worthwhile intentions.
