First of all I'd suggest broading your social circle. You claim this guy is your one and only friend, which isn't the most healthy of life styles to live. Humans need to interact with other humans, so having just one person to depend on isn't exactly going to help you very much. As a person I don't know much about you, and I certainly don't know what you like, however I strongly suggest you take part in activities which you enjoy doing. This should, with any luck, help you meet more people.
As for the guy and whether or not you should be friends; I wouldn't concern yourself with it too much. Like Spock said, you don't have enough information here to assume he's ashamed with you. Keep in contact with him by all means, but try and do the things I suggested above so that you can make more, potentionaly better and much stronger friendships.
