The 3 most popular Anime I know of are NARUTO, Bleach, and One Piece.
Shounen Anime is probably the most popular, in my opinion at least. Because it's directed at boys. Action, adventure, things like that.
My personal favorites are:
Shiki - Needs more love. Classified as a Shounen but has Seinen (male 18 - 30) undertones. Not very popular but all around full of win. May gain more popularity since FUNimation (N. American dubbing company) picked it up. Higurashi-ish because it's set in a small village where people start to die off. But not all is as it seems to be. The audience can quickly find out what it is and it can take the characters a while to catch up (which is understandable) but in the end, it's worth it for what happens.
I generally like all the main characters in this.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Also needs more love. Loved for it's crude humor, sex jokes, black jokes, toilet humor, western-style animation, and other things but really you just have to watch to find out how awesome it really is. Western-style in it's showings too. 15-min. segments as opposed to one 30-min. episode. Stocking is my favorite. Panty is generally the main focus of the show but sometimes Stocking gets in the spotlight.
Spice & Wolf - Most people know of it and watch it only for the sake of Holo. After you start watching it you begin to realize that perhaps some things were a tad misleading, but on the otherhand... wolf-girl. So if you like wolf-girls you end up watching it anyway. And then you come out knowing more about Economics than collage could ever teach you. Basically, it's an Anime about a Pagan deity and Economics. More entertaining than it sounds, has some action in it. Holo is my favorite, of course.
Hellsing: Ultimate - The OVA which is much better than the TV series as it matches the manga. Pretty well known. I'd venture to say if you know anything about Anime, you know about Hellsing at least by name. Bloody, gory, violent, and has vampires, Nazi vampires! It's hard to go wrong with something like this, but the art style is amazing, the story is wonderful, the dub is fucking awesome. All in all, it's a damn good OVA. It's not mindless blood and gore (although it does have that) it has plot and a great one at that. But it's not for everyone, yet most people do know about it. Seras would be my favorite. No reason.
Soul Eater - I find, once again, most people know about this one but may or may not watch it. But I have run into people who've never heard of it. So it's fairly popular. It's your typical Shounen Anime you know the "I have to work harder, I have to get stronger" kind which is the all-around typical theme in Shounen. I like the concept of humanoid weapons, personally. Also there are underline real-world themes that take place in the Anime (at least, since I haven't read the manga) that may or may not have been put in there on purpose - or perhaps I'm just seeing things. Either way, there's something about it I find rather unique and I recommend it to anyone. Medusa would be my favorite, but I actually like most of the characters.
