This film was released in 1982, so it's quite a few years old. It also received a poor reception, so that's probably why you've never heard of it...

Anyway, I watched it with my Dad once and I must say, for a film made in 1982, the special effects weren't half-bad. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that they're better than most of the CGI stuff we see now-a-days.

The film is about a team of researchers who come across an alien creature which assimilates life forms, turning them into grotesque creatures.

It's quite gory, but what I liked most about it was the tension, and the distrust between the characters.

I've never watched it but it does look pretty good, not sure if it's something I'd watch though, I might have nightmares...

One of the more gruesome scenes is on Youtube if you type in The Thing; it has "alien head" in the title. I won't post it here because of children. View at your own discretion.
