Apocalyptic: It's gotta be The war of the worlds (1953) (Yes, not the crappy remake, the original) or Last Night (1998) or, perhaps, The Andromeda Strain (1971)
Zombie: I suppose [Rec] (2007) would count. If not, Night of the living Dead (1968) or Dawn of the Dead (1978). For the "funny" zombie movies Reanimator (1985)
In my opinion, Nobody has ever matched Romero's original trilogy. There is also some debate as to whether the 28 Days (weeks) later series is actually a zombie movie, as the subjects were never dead and the dead don't come back to life. Some have suggested that it's a different subgenre of horror movies, perhaps in the company of, notably, Slither or Bad Taste. Also why I hesitate on my initial choice of [Rec] because, again, they aren't truly zombies. But I'm not decided on how I would classify it as of right now.
