Default Need Life Advice

This will probably be lengthy, but please bear with me. I do not know what to do. When I was 8 or 9 I had a gift card and I bought an ACDC dvd. I studied it obsessively and became obsessed with music because of it. I am 16 now and my life basically revolves around music. I really dont care about anything else. Every artist I listen to I have to read books on, know the history of, tours, collect videos etc. Its obsessive. I have taught myself guitar for the last few years and out of the dozens of guitarists at my school I am probably in the top 5 just from a pure love of music. I usually listen to 6 to 10 albums a day. I love all music except fake music. Today I listened to the first 4 Iron Maiden albums, a Robbie Williams album, finished it with some Zappa and then came home from school and watched 3 Oasis concerts, one from '95, '00 and '06. Is anybody else like me? I have no real group of friends aside from two other that love music as well. But they cant even remember all the crap I somehow do. Its weird. Like im an outsider or something. Me and a good friend have a band we are trying to start, but cant find a drummer for, and we write music daily. I genuinely feel like its my life's purpose to play music for people. But I dont care about theory or scales, I dont give a fuck about college - its all pure passion. I even collect bootlegs for fucks sake! My 160gb iPod has been full since 2 months after I got and half of that is live recordings! And I cant find anybody like me. Am I messed up, or ... I dont know. My friends and family often get irritated with me because I am so obsessed with music. Anyone else like me? Anyone know what to do? Because if I dont end up getting a career playing music, I feel pretty much fucked. I literally have no other interests and its almost irritating to me. Sorry, but I needed to vent this somewhere for a while and this is the only place I could think of. I would rather stay home and do something music-related than hang out with friends, Im very shy, never had a relationship or anything. I just dont know what to do. Im a good student in all but math, and I keep having college readiness rammed down my throat, but i dont care about any of it! If I quit school today to play music it wouldnt bother me at all. Is there something wrong with me? Or do I have OCD or something?

This isn't OCD. This is a passion.

If you have a passion, you should pursue it (which I know you are). If anyone gets in the way of you doing what you want to do, ignore them. Apply yourself to what you want to do, and if you're as dedicated as you sound, you can really become successful if you keep at it. Don't let minor issues deter you from your endeavors.

I wish you luck though, hope things work out.

I agree ^

This is a passion for something and you should peruse it. Some people don't find a passion for something until years later into their life, so do what you enjoy and have fun.
You never know, if you are really serious about music as you sound then you might end up doing a music course in college? It's a great path to go down and I wish you the best of luck.

Its just, I really want to play music but I dont know what the fuck I will do If get out of highschool and cant do that. Its like its engrained in my head that its what im going to do. Hate to sound cliched, but its like when you always hear "he knew he was going to do it". Thats how I genuinely feel. Its just getting there is an issue.

Well if it's ingrained in your head and you have the determination, I don't see any reason why you can't have a career in music.

First off, you sound epic I'm not nearly as knowledgeable or anything like you when it comes to music, i have a hard time remember who's in what bands and stuff like that but i love classic rock and 80's metals. I listen to it a lot. So, you sound really awesome and i think it's badass you can know that much about music. And i think once your older with a job people will appreciate that more. Now, i know you say college means nothing to you which i get but i think you should look into colleges where you could study IN music. That way it opens your eyes and gets you ready for different jobs involving music, perhaps jobs you didn't even know existed. so it is your passion but it's helping you find out what you want to do with the passion. Since bands often don't make it or enough to live off of, you could find another job that involves music just as much, and with your epic knowledge and passion you'd go far.

Good point. But I dont know where to start. Theres so many choices and so much I could do. If I go to college, though, I will definitely take some sort of course that would help for if I ever had to sign contracts or documents, because so many artists have been fucked over by things like that. Paul McCartney is a good example, same with the early 60's Stones. They signed all their stuff pre-Sticky Fingers away to Allen Klein. Thats why they waited 2 years after Let It Bleed to record the album because they wanted to retain the rights. Oh my god! See, I just did it again.

There are a lot of jobs out there that relate to music. If you really like it, then go after it and you'll find something that you'll love doing and that's exactly what you should aim for when you're choosing a profession. Especially, if you love to talk about music, there are a lot of jobs out there that you can do. Worst comes to worst, you can just get a masters in a certain area of music and then you can get paid to teach as a professor and talk about music and write articles that everyone would read.

I know, its just that my unlikely achievable dream is to basically be a rock star, but we all know how stupid that sounds and how unlikely it is. Either way, to just play for money is what I want to do. Theres really no way of putting it without sounding stupid or like a dreamer.
