It's not a matter of mp3 or other music format that is download [en.downtube.eu]ed or not. It all depends what's inside. If the song belongs to somebody that allows you to download it, you can have it. Legally. Otherwise it is illegal. But it applies to everything.

Downloading ANYTHING that is not a program for your computer/laptop is illegal unless from an official site.
