Right now one of the things on my mind is are free mp3 downloads legal. I know there are some way of getting music that are defiantly illegal but just getting a free mp3 download is it legal because if you think about it the artists isn't getting any money for that download and tons of people do it so they are losing tons of money. yet they are still well off. I am not bashing free mp3 downloads i love them my self but i wonder if we are abusing the use of them.
I'm pretty sure downloading any music for free is considered illegal.

In short, a song is an artist's intelectual property and so you need permission to have a copy. Many artists/labels require payment for their property and therefore not paying means you do not have permission to own it.
Unless the owner says you can have it for free, downloading it without paying is equivalent to stealing.

I get all my songs from Limewire. There is a free Limewire and one you pay for. Idk the difference but i don't think limewire would be letting people download something that is illegal. that's just my opinion tho.
Such stuff as limewire is definitely illegal. I use youtube to get my mp3's. They have an huuuge archive of music and a pretty good search. I only have to submit a youtube video to this online converter[youtube-mp3.org] and then I can download an mp3 that I can easily put on my iPod.
It's illegal to download any music for free without the permission of the owners, so in terms of MP3 downloads, programs such as Limewire and BitTorrent are often full of illegal downloads of many music artists works, but if for example a band on MySpace releases a song and has it for free download then that is legal because the people who created it have permitted it to be free.

Limewire don't really have control over what you can download through their program. All of the files limewire let you download, aren't owned by limewire. They just link you to files that other people want to share so the person sharing is breaking the law, not limewire.

Basically whichever way someone gets music downloads for free, whether its by limewire or media converter, its still illegal if it can be bought and you dont have the permission of the owner.
