Well, I'm a grade 7 drummer (8 grades) So here's a few tips.
- Double bass pedals should be used only for flams otherwise they sound tacky
- Learn how to read drum music, not tabs
- Learn and pratice all of your rudiments to become good technically
- Experiment with offbeat fills. 4/4 beats can get boring
- Louder doesn't mean better
- Practice.
- Drumming is hard. Anyone can play a 4/4 beat, but to be good, and I mean actually good, practice all of the above.
Rudiments are as follows
Single stroke rolls (1, 2, 3, 4)
Doubles (1 and 2 and 3 and 4)
Triplets (dum-pet-y dum-pet-y dum-pet-y)
5 strike rolls (Un-i-ver-sit-y Un-i-ver-sit-y Un-i-ver-sit-y Un-i-ver-sit-y Un-i-ver-sit-y)
6 stroke rolls (3 stroke rolls twice as fast)
7 Stroke rolls (Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y Go-to-Un-i-ver-sit-y )
The part in the brackets is how I count them, the dash symbolises changing to a different beat
The rest are to hard to explain over the computer, so I suggest you get a teacher.
The harsh truth is, without ALL of these thins you will be forever average. Hope this helps.
