I have a couple good set books for beginners. First you gotta scrounge up a set.

Basics:

Hi-Hat
Snare
Bass
2 Toms (high and floor, but usually sets come with 3)
Crash Cymbal
Ride or Crash/Ride if you're playing rock.

I'm not much of a string instrument kind of guy. Bass if anything, the world doesn't have enough bassists...

I'm a lefty anyways, and a pianist, so i rely too much on my thumbs (which i can't use for bass or guitar)
