I know a bit about guitars and basses and I want to finally get my own bass and start playing. I have been thinking and researching about basses, and I have found one that suits me:

I just want opinions from someone with more experience on whether or not this is a good bass for beginners.

Im not a bassist, but i am an experienced guitarist and I would highly suggest you play anything you are thinking of getting if you can. You dont want to waste money on something you will end up not liking. You should maybe have specific ideas about what you are looking for. What sound do you want. What type of music do you play. What kind of neck do you like. etc. Hope you have luck!

I really have begun to enjoy really funk based rock, like James Gang, and not so much metal, as in current metal bass isn't all that emphasized, I might have to get a jazz bass, but another bass I am looking at is:

This is supposed to be a good bass to learn off of. I don't play all that much, but I would need to have something to really learn more off of.

How to pick an instrument:

1. Test it out if you can, it's always a plus if you can see what suits you before you make a purchase.
2. Buy what feels comfortable, not what is fanciest. TRUST ME! You can do alot with a medium priced instrument. DONT buy bargain shit. Buy med-high grade stuff.
3. Buy USED! You can get much better stuff USED. Don't get cheap and half broken used items, but get almost new stuff.

Both of the basses are highly recommended for beginners and the first is an actual [I]Les Paul[I] Epiphone, and it was originally like $500, now just $299, but I am not sure it is right for a learning bass.

Go somewhere and play it, at a guitar center or other music center.

Nearest music shop is about an hour and a half away, used to be a great one in town, but not enough good musicians to keep it open.
