So self harming is to get attention, you're totally right. (Being sarcastic)
Being yourself is hard in real life, you know, people do lack confidence. They've been in tough situation's and the last thing they need is people like you telling them to stop trying to get attention.
People cut to stop themselves from going any further down the path of depression, it's a leverage to help them express their emotions, it's not always a cry for attention.
Not all people can be themselves because of the peer pressure to fit in today's society. It's not as simple as 'Be your self because no one will care'.

I'm sorry that happened to you, and I'm glad you've never self harmed and that you can still be you, but everyone react's differently to different situation's, some people deal with it in a better manner than other's will in that situation.

Wikipedia - "Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" which is what it is, a genre of music, you can't be emo.
By that logic, then one can't be Goth either. Or Punk. Because, by that logic, they're only genres of music.
Thing is, definitions often change and the musically inclined ones often branch out to encompass their followers as well, and becomes an identifying word.
Moving on, I don't have a problem with "Emos" or those people who really really wish they were "Emo" and just don't quite get it. To each their own, I'm not going to get my panties in a twist over something that doesn't concern me.
Why should I care what other people do/wear/listen to/etc anyways?
Eh, they're basically no different than sluts and all the other attention whores out there. Only they attract attention by making themselves look ridiculous and acting ridiculous, while other people use sex, or annoying teenage drama.
