Default Football's not that important

It's been just over two years since my friend passed away. It was a real shock at the time, but I thought that I had gotten over it, but recent events have brought all the bad feelings back.

We both used to go and watch the football (soccer) team we supported. 2 years ago, we went and saw our team play our local rivals. We won, and obviously I was absolutely delighted. There was the usual banter between the sets of fans during the match. The match ended, and normally I would go round to his house and we would celebrate or drown our sorrows. However, I'd promised I'd go shopping with my gf, so this time I didn't. I wa so happy about the result, and then came the news which made it all so irrelevant. There was violence and rioting in various areas around the city between the two sets of fans, and my friend was attacked by opposing fans for no other reason tha he was wearing the shirt of the team he supported. He sustained head injury, and later passed away. Why the f**k did rioting have to take place. No matter how much it means to people, football should NEVER be a matter of life and death.

2 years on and we played the same team again. I always knew that just because it was the same game, it was going to bring back bad memories, just like for a while I didn't go to another football match. Throughout the game, the opposition fans were chanting the name of the person who murdered my friend, and unfurled a banner claiming he should be released from jail (which was quickly confiscated by the police.) I was so angry, I can't explain how much I wanted to hurt everyone connected with that banner and those chants. But I couldn't do anything about it, and I still can't arrghhh. I could scream, I can't do anything and stoop to their level, but I'm so f**king angry, and upset...

I was considering doing all sorts of stupid things after the match, revenge etc. but I know it won't help. I just needed to vent.

Inconsiderate pricks. I'm very sorry that you had to put up with that. I can't even imagine how it would feel...

A sad reality is, football rioting occurs on organized levels. Casual Firms.

What happend was an utter disgrace. I'm sorry for your loss man. Like Kirk said, I cant even begin to imagine how bad I would feel.

Sports is the one thing that means nothing but also the world to people.
I don't even like sports and I still find myself fighting for the honor of a team.
It's just how people are.

Riots are a part of what people are passionate about. It's misguided passion I guess.
I'm nowhere close to justifying it, however I do think that no matter what... stay in large numbers and have an escape planned.

I had a friend caught in a riot once. She's okay though. I warned her not to go see the Yankees and Red Sox play but she didn't listen.
Baseball fans generally tend to just talk smack and yell obscenities with the occasional physical bicker.
But things escalate.

It best plan is to do your best to get the hell outta there as fast as you can.

That, however, is overlooking the fact that someone innocent was killed.
No matter what team you're for. No one should ever, ever, do something like that.

When I read this I was really shocked. I'm sorry for what happened. Killing someone just because they wear a different colour shirt and support a different group of eleven men is just wrong. OK I understand that fans are passionate about the sport and their teams but even so, rioting and fighting about it is just barbaric. Chanting a murderer's name is just as bad as the actions of that guy who's now sat in a jail cell.

I have no advice I'm afraid I'm afraid. I just want to offer my greatest sympathies.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I've given it time and I've cooled off alot now. I'm going to the last game of the season, but after that I'm not sure if I'll be going again, I don't feel like it at the moment given all that's happened, but when theres the build up of the new season...who knows, I ended up renewing my season ticket the last time despite not originally wanting to as I got caught up with all the pre-season excitement.

Sorry to bump this thread up again, but a couple of brain dead people who supports the other team decided it'd be f**king hilarious to make an online petition saying basically the same as the banner, thatthe murderer should be freed. Obviously I know that nothing can come of this, but it's really got my back up, I just think it's disrespectful to put it mildly. What's pissed me off even more is that their friends and other supporters of that team have evidently decided this topic is much to funny to just drop and the petition has actually got a number of signatures

Like I say, I'm aware that nothing can come from up, but is there any way you can get stuff removed from the internet, and if it is possible how would I go about getting it removed as I wouldn't know where to start.

It really gets my back up, they just don't seem to be able to get it into their f**king thick skulls that this isn't a joke...my friend died and I don't get how anyone could find something like that worth joking about and even remotely funny.
