Default Foreign Products

Been looking a lot at how many products I could find that were available in store. Went to Hy-Vee (grocery) and looked at produce and was very disappointed, all three selections of tomatoes were imported from Mexico, grapes were from Chile, and the list goes on and on. Just pisses me off on how people complain about how the US is in dept yet we get all of our shit from China, Japan, Mexico, and India (mainly pills, check your labels). If the US really wanted out of debt we would be making green green houses and be growing our own stuff instead of having it coming half way accross the country (depending on were you live) along with chemicals we have no idea on.

Importing products is often better for the economy then trying to produce them internally. Countries such as Mexico and Chile have a climate more suited to growing these crops and it is cheaper than building expensive greenhouses and having to heat them. Cheaper products encourages the population to spend money and therefore fuels the economy. The money a business saves from imports can then be used to invest in future opportunities, possibly protecting it from another shortfall of capital (economic downturn/credit crunch).

Also, the supplier benefits from making exports. If countries like Mexico and Chile have the capacity to produce more than they need, they can sell this to the other countries for a tasty profit. This money then aids their economic recovery (which is always a lot more difficult for less economically developed countries). So all in all, international trade is good for the world.

sure it may be good one way or another economy wise but the taste and quality are horrible. grandfather bought a mexico grown watermelon once, got it home and cut it open half of it was white on the inside with no juice, trashed it. few weeks later he went back, bought another one, same deal. so he told the manager who admitted people were bringing them back but he did not throw them out because of the few that were not (aka profit). not saying all imported food is bad, but if they can be grown in the US with better quality grow them in the US.

It's absurd to say that products made here would just be better. A single case, like with the watermelons, doesn't reflect everything across the U.S. in that regard. I've gotten plenty of foreign melons and other products and have had them be just fine or even better than the ones grown here, and I'm sure that many other people have as well.

If you want production to go back to grass-roots, you'd have to take thousands, hundreds of thousands from white-collar jobs and move them to blue-collar jobs in agriculture and other businesses. One of the reasons that we've gotten to be this way and be so successful is because people have CHOSEN to go into white-collar jobs instead of having strenuous physical labour, encouraging innovation and entrepreneur business, raising life expectancy, and offering more goods and services. By companies spreading to other countries, their economies are lifted, trade is boosted, and you have a stable supply of labour.

Foreign products are often grown by small farmers, then bought, inspected, and transported by supranational companies or American companies or grown on large company farms, not by countries themselves. Much of the time we get food from them when it's out of season for us but in season there (since the northern and southern hemispheres' seasons are opposite in most places). It's cheaper, saving you money and work.

If you really do want products from the U.S., go and grow some or look for places to buy some like farmers' markets or even ordering groceries online. Melons and other foods are easy to grow in your backyard as well.

Well if the Government didn't shut off all the damn water in places where people farm - which also happens to be the place that "feeds the world" I might add - in order to protect some fish-thing so tiny you can't even eat it.

Then we wouldn't have this problem.

I really only go out to get my favorite fruits grown here though. Like Strawberries - I get them in a place that grows them right in the damn store.
Sure they sometimes have dirt on them, but they taste better.

There needs to be fair trade, if we import more than we export then in reality we are getting more screwed.

Point is, we have the land to farm and grow food and crops - we have in the past. But here's the problem... The government won't give any of them any damn water so in order to survive the farmers either have to rely on canned donations or just sell their land!
It's obvious that they want them all off the land as well. Sure, we feed people from other countries with the food that used to come there but hell naw, fuck the starving and fuck charity.
Thanks Government, thanks a lot.

By the way, I used to get fruit from the place I'm talking about... seeing as how their water supply was cut off, intentionally, I can no longer get it from there.

We can produce more jobs for us if we grow our own food here. That will increase our productivity. And you know what else? MORE Taxpayers! That mean the government will get more money and won't have to tax us into Oblivion while still starving people to the point of desperation and not only that but hell we could help other countries as well!

Oh, but no, it's all to save a fish smaller than the palm of my hand... when it could be just as easily saved by putting a netted gate over the pipes connecting to the water supply - allowing the fish not to get sucked in but the water would get sucked it.
But no. Which clearly means, the goal is to get all the farmers off the land.

And by the way, it's a fucking huge piece of land.

Farming and creating stuff here for ourselves should be our priority. It would open up more jobs for us, lowing the unemployment rate, it would generate more individual income to the people which would mean more taxpayers which means more money for the government.
But no, no one wants to do that because oh hell will piss off other countries.

Note, we can still import things. We just should cut back and focus more on producing our own things. At least that way people can have an actual choice in what they buy.
Which if they buy more American things then that will force other countries to make their product better in order to keep up with the competition. Which will result in higher buys for both parties, better the product for the consumer, and maybe even convince other nations to lower their prices on things so that the people can buy more of one thing.

Imported good cost more I might add. With no competition out on the market they don't have to make their product good - no reason to.
If we were to make something good and cheaper then more people will by that thus forcing others to make theirs better and cheaper as well.

It's common sense I don't know why I'm the only person to think of it - it's as if no one knows basic economics, laws of supply and demanding, and cause and effect anymore.

TL;DR:
We make things here. We make more money as a country rather than pay to import goods here which costs us money. Crappy good I might add because there's no competition around to force them to work harder.
