I'm meant to be going on holiday to Greece at the start of September. It's a pre-uni treat that my Vati paid for & I'll be going with my best friend.
Chances are I now won't be able to go because of my wisdom tooth.
It's been trying to come thru for a while now, but last month it (and the surrounding gum) got badly infected. I took a course of anti-biotics and the infection cleared up, so I thought everything would be fine.
It's barely 3 weeks later and the same area's infected, but worse this time around. Apparently there's nothing I could have done to prevent it, it's just the way the tooth's trying to come in. I was told today that I'll have to have it taken out at the hospital.
Which wouldn't be a problem if I a) had a regular dentist to refer me, or b) some money for it all. Getting a regular dentist is almost impossible because of the waiting list, so I'll probably have to give Greece a miss in order to get an appointment asap. And as for the money, I've already spent a total of £100 for anti-biotics, transport, consultations and general treatment. I'm devastated because that was supposed to be holiday money.
In short: I can't put my teeth together and my mouth is hugely swollen, and I'll have to keep putting up with it intermittently until I can get a referral to the hospital.
Also I miss out on a holiday because of it all. );

Can you go to your doctor about it? If you have one, go to your GP and winge and moan about it. Say you're in pain and you can't eat etc. etc. They might be able to refer you straight to hospital and have it taken out on the NHS. I can't guarantee anything but it's worth a try I think.

Don't forget to be awesome.
They actually have a handwritten sign in the window saying "please don't come to us about dental problems - phone the NHS helpline on ... "
but like you said, it's worth a go! I'm currently surviving on soup and water and having to keep my mouth open constantly, it's horrible, :( so maybe if I lay the emotional blackmail on really thick they'll help!

Failing that, go into A&E and try the same. I'm not certain but I think they have to do something to help you, even if it is just a referral.

I don't understand UK health system, so I'll pass on that.
However, I do understand disappointment, so here's a heartfelt "Awwwww.......", I just wish there was something else to say (or do) here to comfort you!
Your GP generally can't do much, its a dental problem you need to get an appointment there. I turn away at least 2 people a day at work with the same sort of problems...
Get in touch with your dentist, if you don't have one get in touch with your local dental access team or riing emergency dentist!
Sorry to hear that, I need to get my wisdom teeth removed when I get my braces removed in less than a year, i'm pretty nervous to be honest, not because of the pain but because I don't want it to get infected.

Aw, you guys! Thanks for the ~support. I'm back on solids now which has cheered me up, and I've been told that if I keep gargling warm water ft. a teaspoon of salt after every meal, I should be able to avoid another infection until I have the tooth out. I'd love to think so because that means I'll be able to go to Greece, wohooo!
Let's see if it works this month first though.

Hahahaa, my point was that I have been in touch with my local dentist - and they're not taking any patients on! I've applied to several nearby surgeries that can't even get in touch with you for at least 3 weeks, and this is the second time I've dabbled with the emergency dentist.

Depressingly, that isn't the first time I've heard that.
Mike, I wouldn't worry about it! Chances of it getting infected after it's been tampered with professionally ... very unlikely. They always take high precautions in places like hospitals anyway, but as mouth/gum/tooth infections = a lot of trouble, they're particularly careful and will probably give you a preventative.
