Also because once people actually believed I was a lesbian, guess what? The insults, physical beatings, everything stopped right in it's tracks once they actually believed it. Before that, they didn't know or care if it was true or not, it was just an insult to let me know that they hated me. To make me feel weaker and them stronger. Had nothing to do with actual sexuality. When the name-calling started for me, the vast majority of them had no idea what sexuality or sex even was - they just knew it could be used as an insult and people didn't like to be called it. Hell, they probably didn't even know what the word meant.
So it's not homophobia, it's about controlling another person, making them believe it to be true. It happens with all sorts of things, insulting hair, fat, height, personality, your face, anything really. It all comes back to just wanting to feel superior.

I can get what you're implying, but most of my encounters were actual homophobic ones, but that's just because I'm coming from a somewhat messed up place.
But it is true that no matter what people do or use, it's mostly in an attempt to feel Majorly superior, and they'll blurt out anything that they might have heard of to be weak.
And yes, half the time the dimwits don't even know what they're talking about.
People like these actually remind me why one can't afford to be nice all the time :\ I know that probably won't make sense.
