All the money wasted on the wars could've been spent providing more Americans with education, healthcare and jobs. There are 34 million Americans who can't afford to visit the doctor because they have no health insurance. Millions more cannot afford a proper education. The government refuses to help those people in any way, and yet they're more than willing to spend billions of dollars for their own needs.
Money is being spent like toilet paper on bullets and missiles, and unemployment is rising by the day. War sucks.
The thing you're forgetting is the military-industrial complex that the government has had since after Eisenhower. Even if we were not fighting a war, a lot of the money you are speaking of still has to go towards the military. This is because the military has become an economic, social, cultural and political force in this country and to separate it from these aspects of our country at this point could have disastrous effects. Defense contractors are a huge part of the national GDP. To cut a majority of the money we are spending on the military out of this would be a major blow to an already struggling economy. The soldiers that are no longer needed are left feeling anomic (at least some of them are), and there would be a large portion of the country saying they feel "unsafe" because we don't have large scale economic support for the military. And the list of potential negative effects goes on and on. So even if we were to pull out of a war, The government would still have to go spend a good chunk of the money on the military in one form or another. (And I might add that education is not underfunded but rather poorly developed and distributed. The government does spend enough on education. It just needs the culture of learning to back it up. Unfortunately, America does not have this at the moment.)
“an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.” - President Eisenhower in his farewell speech
If you don't have an army to back up to other army's in wars we'll turn into the Jews against Hitlers.. Not saying any other country is anything like Hitler, i think that son of a gun was one of a kind hopefully.. but it's the easiest way to put the point.. Humanity will never agree and always fight, that's how the world is. If a bunch of teens on a teen forum can't even get along how do you expect leaders of the world to?
Little white flowers will never awaken you, not when the cold depths have all but overtaken you.
Dearest, The days are all so long,
and in the shadows I spend them all.
My heart and I long for slumber.
Slumber I'm caressing you, I bless your touch, I lust for you.
Slumber you are not a dream, Not as much as you seem.

Hell, forget getting along, it's more like some of us are at each others throats over the stupidest shit. And some of them are adults as well.
The thing about war is that sometimes it is necessary. It's pretty much just large-scale bullying. One starts shit, then eventually both sides fight until one gives up or can no longer fight. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, it's better to fight like hell than to give up. Doesn't matter if you started it or not. The victor is the one who survives the longest and that's all that matters.
War is simply a means to an end. If results could be achieved through other means then we would be doing that instead, don't you think?
The simple reality is that war is a fact of life. Regardless of it being right or wrong, it's a fact. It doesn't matter if there are two people left on the planet, one will eventually kill the other for resources.
People are too different to get along, that's just how it is. Unless you get rid of basic human nature, it'll always be this way. And because of that, war is inescapable.
That being said, almost no one likes war. And war does suck. But it's a fact. Child, teenager, adult, it doesn't matter. Bullies exist everywhere. And that's all war is, one pushes, another pushes back, friends rally to protect their friends, it escalates, both sides spewing their own propaganda shit, until one emerges victorious.
War is about breaking shit and killing people that belong to the enemy. It doesn't decide who's right, it decides who deserves whatever they are fighting over.
Anyway, stupid or not, sucks or not, war is a fact of life. The only way to obliterate war is to, in fact, kill. You'd have to enslave the human race to get rid of it. Which would involve mindless killing.
Generally speaking, a lot of people fight so they won't be killed themselves. If one feels threatened, they should fight to kill. If one is attacked, they should hit back harder. If they still don't get the message, you obliterate their asses to Kingdom Come and make an example of them saying "fuck with me, and this'll be you".
Mind you, I'm not saying I like it or anything, I'm saying it's reality. To fight is rational, to allow yourself to be defeated is suicidal. Doesn't matter what side your on. All that matters is winning.
It's simple playground-tactics. It's something we never really grow out of. As evident by our basic nature.
TL;DR:
Right or wrong, being a total pacifist is suicidal. If you want to live, then you fight. Occasionally, you have to get your hands dirty in order to do what is right in your eyes.
Take it as you will. I'm sure most people will misunderstand it all anyway.

It was his choice to join the military in the first place, though.

Just fyi, soldiers don't fight "for America," they fight for the United States government. He probably joined because the military pays for college or something.
The government is power hungry and made up lies and excuses to invade the middle east, because they needed power and influence in that part of the world (and oil.) All conflicts in the world arise from greed, ultimately. Greed and love of power. War is a very terrible evil and it needs to be done away with as soon as possible, if humanity is to have any hope.
You dont know crap about why my boyfriend joined the Military.
It was not for the moeny, there are easier an safer ways to make way more moeny. Why would you join for the moeny if you may not be able to enjoy it.
He joined to fight for american freedom. He joined to make a positive difference in the world. He joined to protect the week. He joined to defeat the talliban. He joined to stand ready to deffend america against any and all threats that may come upon us.
War in the fondation of the world, without war we would not have countires like we do today. War is ugly but it is needed. It is essential to live free.
My dad died for american freedom, he died with a flag on his shoulder he died deffending america, he died doing his duty.
