I hate to play the Devil's Advocate, but here we go:
I totally understand that part about your father; I don't have a military background, but I have a healthy respect for the armed forces, and if there was a draft, I would not run, despite my qualms about war and such. Further, I also understand your disgust at the coverage a whore high bitchass like Amy Winehouse got.
But here's the thing. Its your perception. You can't be hard on stupidity, you can't be hard on people who are ignorant. I do debate, and I'm kind of hardcore. But one time, this kid who obviously did not give a shit, went up, and then I questioned him. I looked like a total ass, simply because ignorance and apathy are things that are natural. While I agree that the kind of coverage amongst teenagers was lax by that in Norway, unless you ar Norwegion, the majority of the teenage population did not care, simply because it did not effect them.
Its referred to as NIMBYism. Basically, NIMBYism (not in my backyard) is a theory in human geography that details that if its not in their home country, or town, state, ocean, etc. they don't give less then two shits. Sure, people are ignorant. Sure, celbrities are overpopulized. Hence the term pop culture.
Its the same thing when a dog die in a movie and people are bawling their eyes out, but like a massacre everyone just says how it sucks and moves on. We create our own problems. Nobody wants to hear about how some guy in Norway, Afghanistan, or fucking Africa shot up a school. They want bad news, but not too bad news. Everyone is content with sticking their heads in the sand.
And to an extent, its great. Simply because if everyone cared, the world would be in panic.
However, I mostly agree with you. But don't be frustrated by ignorance. Because you, me, no one is ever perfect, and someone probably thinks this about you as well.
Excellent observations though. Oh, and as much as people annoy me sometimes, I wouldn't consider myself a misanthrope.

yeah actually you sort of should be hard of stupidity. Ignorance is sort of a different story. But if someone knows better and just chooses alternatively then they're just being inconsiderate stupid fucks. Just like that literature class example. He's a nice guy, never yelled at us, all he needs to do is simply take roll. You'd think that with such a nice teacher that you'd shut the fuck up for just five seconds so he can take roll. But nope nope, that would make too much goddamn sense. Instead they continue to talk and bicker among each other. Those types of people are those that I'd like to brutally sodomize with a steel pipe. . . . okay maybe being a bit harsh but that really does piss me off.

Well it shouldn't be that way, you should give a shit no matter where something happens. If it's wrong, it's wrong. Whether someone got shot up in Africa or whether a massacre occurred in Norway. That's just a result of cancerous humanity.

I have to disagree here. It's not great at all, if people cared the world wouldn't be in panic, if you think about it it'd be a lot nicer and let unpleasant. Because people who care wholeheartedly actually take action and do things whereas someone who really didn't obviously would naturally do nothing.
