I Can't Even Fathom! Someone With a 'Normal' Midset Explain
So I'll spare you how it got to this point, but basically I showed my sister the video to one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard (at least in terms of messages/meanings) and the song is pretty blatant about what it means. I happen to agree with the song, all of it.
Well it's not like she was listening or anything because half way through it she was all like "Just stop it. It's scaring me." and I'm like "How is it scary?" and she gave me this look like I was nuts or something. I thought it was all beautiful... well except for this one thing, that I think was a mask, and it was a little creepy - I'll admit that.
But that was hardly in the video. Not only that but almost each time a new image popped up, she gasped or made some comment of shock about it.
The video shows people who are deformed in some way and creepy imagery plus pictures of the band. I can't even fathom why some people find those things scary in the slightest. It's like they are not paying attention to the meaning.
Well, anyway, it's still a brilliant song either way. It's called Lies of the Beautiful People by Sixx:A.M. and here's the video so you can see what I'm talking about. Please, and I do mean it, someone explain how anything in this video is "scary"? Oh and it's VEVO so I'm not sure if it'll play on this site or not.
No, I really mean it, I just don't get how anyone can find these images scary at all.
So I'm thinking it's just my mindset or something. And maybe that's why I can't fathom why anyone would find anything in this video scary. It's like trying to figure out why some people prefer the color yellow to gray... I just don't get it. Probably never will.
But maybe if someone explained it to me I'd understand better.
Oh and this is in the rant section because I'm rather pissed she would find these images so sickening that she had to get up and leave the room.

I was about to leave as soon as I this guys horrific beard, but I decided to stay to see the images, and I do understand why your sister would leave. I mean, who wants to look at this stuff, it's just a bunch of disturbing images, why WOULDN'T you stop watching?

Yeah that's not really explaining anything. Please explain why, I honestly do not understand the reasoning behind it. Grotesque? Well he did say that in the song, but I don't find them grotesque at all.

Who? Maybe someone who understands that there are people who are different on the outside and realize they're still human all the same.
Why wouldn't I? Because it's beautiful, that's why. It's like he says at the beginning of the song "I find beauty in things that don't necessarily define beautiful".
Again, i want to understand why people find these images so horrible. I know that they do already, I've always known that people find images like these disturbing. What I don't understand is why.
Also the beard suits him somehow. Don't hate on the awesomeness of funny looking beards.
Like I said, it's probably my mindset and that's why I don't understand why. I want to understand why people find these images so horrible. Esp. when I find them beautiful. Except that mask thing... no, that just keeps giving me nightmares.

This is all my opinion but I think people think this way Because society has inbred a reaction in a majority of people to images that refuse to conform to it's definitions of "normal" and "aesthetically pleasing". It's sort of a protection method designed to resist change, in simple terms. I, personally, didn't find any of the images disturbing or "scary". Yet, I understand how one can perceive such images in that way.
Re: I Can't Even Fathom! Someone With a 'Normal' Midset Explain
its because they're obviously meant to look dark and creepy, which most people would be rather put off by and not want to look at. the whole tone of the video is dark, and that tends to be associated with scary things.

To clarify myself a bit more, This is the inbred reaction I'm talking about. My opinion is that if you were to have a society that grew independently outside of modern Western societal influences (Perhaps in earlier societies in history this would apply but I'm not sure), there is a good chance that these images would be perceived as beautiful or even shown more often.

I don't think so really. It doesn't really seem fake to me.

That makes sense I suppose. Although I really can't understand that mindset either... *grumbles to self*
Well at least you're capable of understanding that. I can't, even though you just explained it. XD
It's really funny considering how I was raised. Which was, more or less, to not be outstandingly weird but if people don't like the way I am then they can kiss my ass. Part one came from my mother, part two from my father. That being said, i never really listened to my mother growing up. Ha ha...
On top of that my father never was one for societal conformity, which he always found rather stupid. Then again, he thinks I'm weird too but doesn't care as much as my mother. For the record, they almost always tell me I'm weird on a daily basis...
Either way, I was always taught society is mostly stupid most of the time and to use my own brain and gut to figure things out for myself... so I really don't understand the concept of societal norms. No matter which society you may be referring to... so I don't see the need for norms in general.

But why? I know all that, that much is obvious by the reactions. What I don't get is why they're put off by it. Why is dark and creepy a bad thing?
Although I suppose the last part makes sense... but I still don't really get it. Why is it associated with scary things? I suppose it's because people fear what they can't understand or comprehend, is it?

Shame on your sister for formulating her own opinion, what is wrong with her?
Yeah totally.
Oh wait, except that's societies opinion and she's a societal follower. I'm not only asking why she reacted this way but why a lot of people do - she's just one of the many drones who thinks along the lines of what is deemed normal by society. I'm asking a variety of "why's" here.
That's not what I meant. She can have her own opinions all she likes. What bothers me is how she seemed down-right revolted at these images of people (you know, other human beings) just because they were different.
Also it bothers me that her answer, when I asked, was "because it's weird" and couldn't answer when I asked why or how and just kept saying because it is. That's not an answer, that's a societal thing. There's no reason for it, other than because society says so.
