Not to be offending anyone, but this one goes out to eveyone except DeepDistress:
Have you people ever had/trained a dog?

This is a CLASSICAL example of a dog who has learned that it can get what it wants by being destructive, hyperactive and overall disturbing. The Russel was not naturally selfish, it has learned that those ways actually work for getting what she wants.

You must start learning the dog who the boss is. Never give her any treats unless she behaves good. Use physical touching and prodding to disciplin her when she is misbehaving.
And I'm not saynig you should throw a roundhouse-kick in her face, although I know it may be very tempting. Use your voice, be stern, make some rules for you to make her follow.
If she wont stop barking or misbehaving when you tell her, and she directs her anger towards you then you just launch your arm forward, grab her by the skin of the neck and lift her up/lay her down and hold her down. Trust me, this is the best form of dominance you can show the dog.

Discipline it, and it will learn. It is not a freaking human who will sue you for harassment or will get even angrier with you. It is in their nature and instincts to follow the biggest and strongest, something that you will be to her when you teach her some discipline.

As for the "cat living with dog". It is perfectly natural. Discipline the attacker and have them spend a lot of time together and they will get a long. They may still be "enemies", but their respect for you will keep them from fighting. I have several friends who have cats and dogs living together in peace. I cant have a cat tho, as my family is allergic against them xD I've had several dogs, everything from a Jack Russel to a big swedish Jämthund.

I have 3 dogs and 4 cats. I know exactly what it's like to have them both, thanks. I just know that if I hear another story of a dog killing a kitten when left together, I will scream. You're never supposed to force a cat and a dog on each other, or even two cats or two dogs, for that matter. It doesn't matter if they respect you or not, they will fight and possibly harm one another if they feel threatened.

I was just pointing out that it's natural for a dog not to like cats and it's not the dog's fault. Nothing is the dog's fault. It can't help the way it's being taught.

This.
Dogs learn bad things = reward. But they don't sulk around or try and be annoying, or plot schemes and stuff like that.

Jack russel's are very energetic and hyper. She will always be that way (unless maybe sumbody in ur family can train her). Good luck. I love dog's. I have had two terriers, one even loved her "brother" the cat. Every dog is an individual, but all dogs need to be trained.

btw it's good to hear from u Dee xD

You'll learn a lot when you've trained four dogs that was adopted by the police.

I'm also going to be in the dog-training squad when I'm serving my mandatory one-year militairy service

Sounds like a case Cesar would be more than happy to take a look at and sometimes (if not most of the time) it's not the animal fault, but the people who live with it.

She has been acting the way she has since we got her, which was when she was 3 weeks old. Regardless of what you all think, dog's do, like other household pets, have a personality. Her personality is more of a severe attention-seeking one. My parents refuse to discipline her and so her behavior has gotten worse. Despite my efforts to actually train her to act somewhat decent it hasn't exactly worked since my parents are constantly breathing down my neck and telling me I'm abusing her when I've never laid a hand on her or starved her or anything of the sort. They spoil her and it's making her behavior worse.

By the way, she grew up with Smudge (my oldest cat) and only lately has she been snapping at her. She's 11 and I'm forgiving her attitude towards Smudge due to the fact that she's an angry, grumpy old lady. She has no reason to nip at Marvin though. He's really tried avoiding her from the start.

No one denied that dogs do not have personalities, we just said that dogs don't think the way you're thinking her to be.

And, if you look to the bold section, you prove what all of us have said. She's not being punished so she's learning she can get away with it more, and that way she's becoming worse. She was like this as a puppy also because baby things don't know what is right and what is wrong and your parents failed to teach her that, so you can't really say it's her personality, it's not a babie's personality to play with things that he was never taught not to. She could have a troublemaker type personality, but still very different from you saying her self pitying till she gets what she wants crap. dogs will show a sort of bummed mood when they think they're going on a walk when you move the leash then you don't, or if you yell at them and they know they did something wrong. but they cannot think for hrs and hrs and hrs to be sad and they will get what they want. That's why if you yell at a dog and it's sad and two mins later it's jumpy and licking you because it's happy your going on a walk. They don't hold that regret, guilt, sadness, etc. They don't really have much shame to them. they can't think that complex. They don't know how to act "cute" to get what they want, that's just in us humans that find it cute and think they're doing it etc to get what they want.

and for the record, I'm very much the type to defend that animals are smarter then a lot give them credit for, it's something my dad and i often fight about. but not in this case.

And this is why dogs are man's best friend....

Yes, if the dog learned discipline when it was younger it would of been easier and it wouldn't be as wild and crazy as it is now. But you can teach old dogs new tricks. Im no Ceaser Malan so i can not really help you with training the dog by yourself tho =/
