The way I see it, great moments in history do not excuse current behavior. Yes Greece gave us a lot, there's no denying that, but currently they don't have a hell of a lot to offer.
So you're saying you deserve respect because of what people in the past did?
That's like saying I deserve the utmost respect because I'm a descendant of Benjamin Franklin (which i am by the way). Greece didn't do anything to be worthy of current respect. Almost everyone respects what they once did but that doesn't mean it should carry over when what once was is now a total 180.
The past is the past, so respect the past and learn from it. That, however, doesn't mean you should be respected as a whole for it. That's nothing more than arrogance and using what people from your past did and claiming it as your own.
Respect is earned. Respect comes and goes. Anyone worthy of respect is dead and gone in this case. Greece was worthy of respect and still is as far as the past goes. But it's horrible to demand respect just for what others did. Doesn't matter if they were from the same country, they were not from the country as it is now. Greece back then and Greece today are different, almost every country is like that.
Pfft, because you demand respect for the hard work of those long dead, that just makes me more likely not to give Greece any. I hate nationalist arrogance. Yes, Greece gave us many things in the past, but they've done nothing as of late. You shouldn't rely on the past for respect. You should advance. Current actions are just as important as past actions. However, after a certain time, past actions cannot make up for current ones.
I mean, that's like saying you should give a student good grades in high school just because they made good grades in elementary school.
Basically, Greece doesn't deserve respect as it is now. Past Greece deserves respect. Those who worked hard deserve respect. Not those who demand it just because people from their history did something great. What I mean is that it's possible to respect what was given without respecting the current.
I respect what Greece has given us. I don't respect they way they are now. I don't let totally different people from the past decide who I should respect now or in the future. That's just foolish. For the record, I'm semi-knowledgeable on Greek History. I'm no expert but I know enough. I know all that Greece has given the world, I'm aware of all that. But Greece as it is now really hasn't done anything worthy of respect.
I respect those who worked hard. Not those who want respect just because they can claim someone from their country's history did great things.
That's like saying America deserves all the respect in the world for our own inventions. It's stupid, it doesn't make any sense. It came from our country, that doesn't mean we have anything to do with it.
So no, I won't respect Greece. Nor will I disrespect it. I respect what it once was and what people of the past gave to us and I respect said people as well. But the current Greece has done nothing to earn respect. That's about as stupid as saying I should respect England just for packing all the Puritans on a boat and shipping them off to the Americas. And I mean, as it is now. But people from the past? Yes, thank you for that.
Quite frankly, most countries as they are now do not deserve much respect. That doesn't discredit past events though. It's also like saying we should hate Germany because of Hitler. Stupid. Doesn't make sense.

What you should understand:
1) Not everything is based on Greeks - there were other GREAT nations before YOU (eg. Egypt, Palestina, India, China) - and they had religion, medical stuff, astronomy, and great architecture as well.
2) The today's Greece isn't great (as you said before) - so people won't respect it.

No, we judge a country but its currect state - the history isn't that important when it comes to that. For example, China has a great history, but I won't respect a country that kill its citiziens, and where's communism.

I judge a country on it's history also, the history places a huge amount. I think it's just different person to person. I think people should respect it more simply because there are decent people in it. Just like middle east, obviously there's horrible people there but not everyone is like that, so you can't really hate it and cuss it out as a whole.

Every country should be respected because all of them are important, not only to the history of the world, but also the current state of the world. Whether it be Gabon or Zimbabwe or Cambodia or Germany, Each country has made mistakes but each country has also contributed to the world as well. It's not the countries that should be disrespected, but the people who make the mistakes that should be disrespected. Each state provides a framework for the brilliance and stupidity of their people to shine through. And because they all provide this framework, each country deserves respect.
