Default Private schools

This is my brother's final year in high school and we have to enroll him in a college before February 1st. Seeing how we moved at the beginning of this year the School Board Of Education allowed us to choose any college in region. But, my parents are sick of the school board and want to take him out of it completely, by either home schooling him or enrolling him in a private school.

Well, I got in an argument with them stating they cannot home school him, that is just horrible, in my opinion, so we searched around and came across a private school in Aurora.

There is a St. Andrew’s College, Open House (The private school we are looking in to), but before we RSVP I just wanted to see if any of you or know of someone who has gone to a private school that you would recommend? The open house is sort of telling the administrators you will more than likely go to the school, so I would really like to see other options for my brother.

Hi Mich,

I went to private school....and I agree with your assessment of home schooling. School is about education..but it's also about socialization, and you get neither at home.

You might help your folks gooooogle private schools in your area, or consulting the register of private schools, or have them ask the school board for recommendations in your area (NOTE: I don't think it wise to post too much personal info here about your location or school!).

One of the things that your folks might want to keep in mind is that each independent school (the PC term for 'Private school') has a different educational and social philosophy (ours was public service and the need to give back), so itls important to make sure that there's a good fit there btw'n their values and your family's.

Sam,

Thanks for your fast reply That is exactly what I told my parents and my brother to begin with is not that sociable, so he needs to be around people!

Well, that is how we found the one school, was on Google and the rest did not really seem to interesting to us, I guess we need to do deeper researching

If you wouldn't mind, do you want to PM me your PC's website? I would love to check them out

Thanks

I think spock has got it right ( as he usually does ). I think generally home schooling is a bad idea because nowadays education isn't as based on expanding your understanding of the subjects as it should be, its more about getting you through the exams, exam technique is a major skill that will be better taught by teachers with experience rather than parents with little experience of the exam structure. Home schooling can produce good results but it requires a really strong work ethic and similar or better results could be achieved at a school plus the other benefits of social interaction. Also if there are any problems at home they could cause serious effects to his learning.
So overall i think a school would be the better option.

It's clear none of you know anything about homeschooling. Misconceptions all around, that's all it ever is.
I say this because having been homeschooled and having known people homeschooled from a young age, they are some of the smartest and nicest people I've ever met and get along great with most everyone unless you've got a problem with them. There's also the whole family time thing. Not to mention many different ways to socialize.
What I'm getting at is this, don't judge it before you get to know it.

However I've had friends who've gone to private school and they've said it was loads better than public.
I've also known people who've done home and wouldn't go back to school even if you paid them - and by the way, they all socialize fine, better than most people I know and have 10x the education I've seen with most other people.

But before you know it's the right school, you gotta check it out first.

Contrary to the assumption that homeschooling is a poor choice.. you will in fact find that homeschooling is a great option. In fact, many of my friends who have been home schooled are the brightest in the class - and they are just as involved socially - if not more then their public/private school counterparts.

Anyways, my younger brothers are in private schools (I opted for public because I wanted to finish where I started).

Look closely at the school and go to the open house. Only after that will you know if its the right school for the needs of your brother and your family.

It's pretty obvious that people who are home schooled are more likely to be more intelligent as if there parents are considering teaching them, then they must be reasonably clever and if your parents are clever you are more likely to be clever and be more interested in the academic side of life. There are many more aspects of education than just learning, such as dealing with many different kinds of people, i think it's a very important skill learning to deal with people that you do not get along with. Also by being in an environment with alot of different type of people i think you find out what kind of person you are.

And you can accomplish this through various activities. I know there are "home school" activities for local homeschooled kids, there are things such as boy scouts, girl scouts, religious groups, interest clubs, etc.

You miss some of the social factor of being in a school. However, you can make up for that through other means - that is my point. And as far as "dealing with many different kinds of people" especially those you don't get along with... We do that every day in life. Regardless if we're in school or not.

If you are home schooled you are unlikely to be forced into a situation where you have to spend time with people you dislike because you study at home and your spare time is most likely going to spent alone with your family or with friends or people who share you own interests who you will most likely get along with.
I can think of very few occasions where you will regularly have be in a situation for an extender period of time with some whos going to make your time around unpleasant
