For me, it depends. I don't really like composition classes much. Well, I suppose I don't mind them. I'm just not very adept at writing. I suppose that's the problem here.
I can tell just from reading this thread that you do not write well. I mean, your writing should be clear and any reader should be able to understand what you are saying from the first time reading it.
"Hey guys, if you didn't know, I hate English (the subject) with a passion.< (take out and) The (fact the)<take out exams are stupid, and the books we have to study<change study to analyze are hard. I really struggle. I am in the top set for English, but I get grades like I am in the second bottom set."<i don't even know what that last part is suppose to mean.
I <capital I know this isn't formal writing, but damn, you should be able to write simple sentences. I think you should focus on reading basic books or articles here and there. This will allow you to analyze the way the authors or journalists write. Also, begin with basic sentences, and then when you proofread your paper no comma required then you can build up and add big words or analogies, or whatever sentence too long- add a full stop somewhere in this sentence because I feel like you would just end up sounding wordy and awkward if you try to write "smart" write off the bat.
btw, i don't want you to get the wrong idea. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to help.
lol, oh whatever, i was not paying attention to grammatical stuff! hahaha

Of Mice and Men is EASY SHIT man. COMPARING is EASY SHIT man. They obviously must give you a passage from the book to compare with the poem. You do just that. You read both, and you compare. Because there's going to be many things to compare, and they're going to be in plain sight which is why they chose to put the passage and poem together. If you don't know any 'big' words, start doing practice comparisons with challenging ones you've picked yourself. Get a thesaurus and go through it; learning what you need to learn.
And just to inform you; sets don't matter in english. Being top set doesn't mean your better at english than ones in the second (bottom) set. I'm in the second set, and I get higher marks than mostly everybody in the top set (And mostly everybody in my set, mind you). You learn the exact same thing at basically the same pace. Hell, sometimes slower.
I was in the top set once (Got moved down with about a dozen other people because it was too big a class[That's what they tell us anyway, I think they just thought were were stupid]) and nothing is different.
Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive
