High GPA, lots of extracurricular activities, lots of money and lots of connections. High SAT scores also help.

NYU sophomore.

If it's a public state university, not a whole lot. A midrange GPA and SAT/ACT score will get you in guaranteed. A low range one might get you in as well. Especially if you go to an in state university. Private universities are harder and require more but those aren't state funded either. The only other thing you need to be able to do is be able to afford it through scholarships. loans, or out of pocket. .

So, in short, at least a mediocre to midrange GPA and SAT/ACT Score and a way to finance your education. That's it.

the basics: extra curricular activities, decent grades/ GPA, decent ACT/ SAT scores, other stuff you have done, essay you had to write, teacher recommendations.

it makes more since nowadays to go to a branch campus first or a community college first though, for a lot of people.

I think what the first person said and Bryan is true. I would really know since all the schools I'm going to apply for are private universities or institutions.

Would you consider 2.269 on a 4.0 gpa scale in that GPA range?

That's a little low for guaranteed acceptance or anything like that, if you assume normal course rigor. Of course, a lot depends on the specific university that you are trying to get into and what other credentials you have. That's not to say that you won't get in. A lot of times, with a gpa like that, it could go either way. I'd say apply to several in-state schools and see if you get accepted into any of them. I've seen people with lower Gpa's get into state schools. So I think that a 2.2/2.3 is marginal.
