Can you clarify the 'using his hand' concept? Do you mean he had to aim it?
Believe it or not, that's sometimes necessary. We have to aim when we use the toilet, for example. Now naturally we're usually flacid when we do that, but even when fully erect one doesn't have perfect control over the think, it's bound to sway a little.
Not to mention, and it's not your fault or anything, but not everyone gets 100% erect. For a variety of issues they might only get about 75% swole or something, and that's just enough to make it not rigid enough to get in when pressure is applied. Basically, your tightness is overpowering his rigidity, so that's why he is helping to keep things on track in a manual fashion.
