We used to do this on the teen forum that I moderated at. Here's the deal:
Members will have the option to be partnered with a mentor. A mentor is someone that will help the members assigned to them feel welcome on the site and help them learn their way around. Your mentor can be your go-to person for advice, questions, or whatever you need them for. Keep in mind that your mentor is not the only person that you can go to. You can ask all members of the site questions and interact with anyone.
I realize that we have a few staff members dedicated to this type of thing, but I was thinking that if a few more got involved in the welcoming process and we had others in the community besides the PAs helping members find their way around, it might make members feel more welcomed.
Mentors would not have to be staff. A mentor would be someone who has been around for awhile and is interested in contributing more to the well-being of Teen Forumz.

A thought: It seems this idea has support - so why not make it member driven? It stands to reason that so long as it does not violate any rules or prove detrimental to the site as a whole, nothing prevents members from taking the initiate upon themselves.
We have a "groups" feature - a simple creation of the mentors would suffice. Work in conjunction with the Assistants on this - as this would fall within their purview - and see what happens.
I support the idea; but I'm interested to see if we can have this be member driven.
If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please feel free to send me a PM or a VM! I'll be back in a week.
